EastCountySports.com staff report
EL CAJON – Hats off to El Cajon Valley Braves girls basketball program for hosting their first Valley Brave Winter Classic at their gym.
The event was a good format, featuring competitive teams that were relatively balanced.
The Lincoln Hornets ended up winning the event by defeating the West Hills Wolf Pack in the title game.
However, a pair of East County teams won consolation games on Monday, including the host Braves.
MONTE VISTA 60, CENTRAL 24 – The Monarchs won a consolation game at the Valley Brave Winter Classic thanks to a terrific defensive performance, especially in the first half.
Monte Vista led at halftime 17-9 then took off in the second half, thanks to a 24-point third quarter.
Samantha Gonzalez hit a pair of three-pointers – one in the opening period and one in the fourth quarter – and ended up with 16 points for the Monarchs.
Jourdan Barber scored 10 points for the Monarchs.
Meadow Delino had a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter for Monte Vista, which improved to 6-6.
Jaelynn Bocala hit a three-pointer in the second quarter for Monte Vista, which will face Sweetwater on Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. in a tournament game at Sweetwater High.
EL CAJON VALLEY 44, MARANATHA CHRISTIAN 30 – The Braves improved to 10-4 on the season with the win over Maranatha Christian at the first Valley Brave Winter Classic.
Freshman Ruth Taulanga scored 18 points for the Braves, who turned a 7-6 lead after one quarter into a 20-15 lead at halftime.
ECV outscored the Eagles, 14-9, in the third quarter.
Senior Vean Gorgees added 13 points for ECV, knocking down three three-pointers. She also added nine assists in the game.
Freshman Aniah Deloatch also had a three-point bomb. She led the team with three steals, as well.
Junior Fineita Taulanga added 10 rebounds, as the Taulanga sisters combined for 17 rebounds.
Tarry Flournoy had six rebounds for the Braves.
LINCOLN 52, WEST HILLS 27 – The Hornets improved to 9-0 with the win in the Valley Brave Winter Classic championship game over the Wolf Pack, who fell to 8-2.
Nolie Wiley hit a three-pointer for the Wolf Pack in the opening quarter, as the Wolf Pack managed just five points in the opening quarter, trailing by double-digits.
Paige Evans had a pair of three-pointers for the Wolf Pack in the second half.
Maddie Glass had six points for the Wolf Pack.
West Hills scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
“When I was first going into the game, I was anxious to bring some energy and defense into the game,” West Hills’ Mia Jacques said. “The hooting and hollering from the Lincoln fans fueled me to want to play harder because I knew I could do something to help the team. If we kept playing with the energy we had, then I felt we could give these girls a challenge for the win.”
SAN DIEGO 57, SANTANA 45 – The Sultans dropped the third-place game at the Valley Brave Winter Classic to the Cavers.
San Diego High improved to 10-3.
The Sultans’ Bella Terry was named to the All-Tournament.
