EL CAJON – The San Diego City College Knights defeated Moorpark, 80-60, in a Grossmont College Invitational game at Grossmont College on Saturday.
San Diego City improved to 8-3 by winning its fourth straight game.
Dominic Hovasse scored 29 points, including burying four three-pointers, as the Knights outscored the Raiders, 48-27, in the second half.
“Our goal is a state championship, said Hovasse, a 2015 graduate of Torrey Pines High. “Anything less of that I don’t think is a success. We still have to get better as a team. The pattern of starting slow has to be eradicated.”
Kai Huntsbury added 13 points, while Makiah Morris contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Knights.
“Makiah Morris dominated the boards on offense and defense,” San Diego City College assistant JoeD’Ambro said. “We competed on defense in the second half, got out in transition and got to the rim. We took more high percentage shots in the paint and stopped settling. Our pressure wore them down.”
Morris, a freshman from Vista High, chose San Diego City over MiraCosta.
“We all just love to win and compete and I think that shows on the court,” Morris said. “I love the chemistry we have and I love the guys.”
Isaac Davis came off the bench to score 13 points.
Former Mount Miguel star Darian Norwood had four points and four rebounds for SDCC.
“We’re a young group that’s learning how to compete on defense every possession for 40 minutes,” D’Ambro said. “I have no doubt we will get there and that usually translates into a lot of success and ‘W’s.”
The Knights followed up the win by defeating Palo Verde on Sunday, 100-51, as Hovasse scored 21 points, and teammate Drew Cesse came off the bench to score 14 points.
L.A. SOUTHWEST 70, GROSSMONT 63 – The Grossmont College Griffins lost on Saturday to L.A. Southwest to remain winless on the season.
Grossmont led 34-33 at halftime but eventually lost for the 11th consecutive time on the campaign.
Jamal Johnson scored 23 points and had eight rebounds to lead Grossmont, while Jabbar Wade added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Kade Kygar added 10 points for Grossmont.
Grossmont was defeated on Friday night by Palo Verde, which won its first game in 41 years as the school is returning to intercollegiate athletics after a long four-decade hiatus.
