SAN DIEGO – Helix sophomore Ariy’Ana Duke burst onto the scene on Thursday, pouring home 22 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, recording six steals, and blocking four shots in the Highlanders’ 63-43 win over host Francis Parker in a Matador Classic game.
Duke wasn’t shy about her shot. She attempted 23 field goals in the contest, converting 10 of them. She also took four charges on defense.
The Highlanders turned in a big second half to put away the Lancers.
Helix led just 15-13 after one quarter and 28-24 at halftime.
Still, Parker kept it close, trailing just 40-32 entering the fourth.
But the Scotties stormed home with a 23-point fourth quarter to improve to 3-1 on the season
Junior Selena Soloman added 16 points, including four three-point field goals on just six attempts.
Junior Samonah Betts finished with 12 points, five boards, and three steals.
Helix will face Bishop’s on the road Wednesday at 6.
MILLENIUM 58, CHRISTIAN 45 – At the La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16, the third-ranked Patriots trailed 33-11 at halftime before posting a mild rally in the second half.
The Patriots outscored the Tigers, of Goodyear, Ariz., 20-11 in the third quarter but couldn’t get much closer.
Goodyear is ranked No. 1 in Arizona’s 5A Conference, the second-highest tier in the state.
Christian (1-1) did it with a wild barrage of three-pointers in the third period.
Amaya Howard canned three treys, while Allie Carreon, Koko Akridge, and Kristin Williams all added triples, as well.
Williams and Carreon also each had a three in the fourth but Tigers matched the Pats point-for-point in the period to improved to 2-0.
James led Christian with 11 points, while Carreon added 10 points.
Christian will face Tucson High Magnet School, which lost to La Jolla Country Day, 70-22 on Thursday at the event, at 8 p.m. on Friday at LJCD.
ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY 38, EL CAJON VALLEY 31 – The Braves nearly rallied against the Crusaders in a non-league game on Thursday in San Marcos.
Freshman Ruth Taulanga had 11 points and nine rebounds for El Cajon Valley.
Senior Vean Gorgees added seven points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out a pair of assists for the Braves.
Juinor Fineita Taulanga had 12 rebounds for ECV, while junior teammate Silvia Aboud added eight rebounds.
Aboud also had three steals and two assists.
El Cajon Valley (4-3) trailed 17-10 after one quarter. The Braves trailed 31-21 entering the final quarter.
GROSSMONT vs. VISTA MURRIETA – The Foothillers and Broncos were scheduled in an Excalibur Classic game at San Marcos High on Thursday. No result was reported.
