SAN DIEGO – The Granite Hills Eagles dropped a 48-20 decision to Francis Parker in a Matador Classic game on Monday night.

The Eagles were limited to just one field goal in the first half but were outscored just 21-12 in the second half.

Granite Hills fell to 2-3.

Blanca Hernandez made 4-of-6 free throws in the first half and finished with a team-high five points.

“Blanca Hernandez she played hard the entire game hustling on offense and defense,” Granite Hills coach Jermani Stewart. “She attacked the basket and rebounded the ball, as well.”

Junior guard Grace Jambi had four points in the third quarter to pace Granite Hills’ scoring in the second half.

“No matter what the score the girls are still working hard doing what we are supposed to do,” Stewart said. “I’m proud of this team and I’m excited to see how they will continue to grow. They have been working hard and we can see the improvement.”

Junior Sarah Ladu also had four points for the Eagles.

“We have gone over what all of our strengths and weaknesses are and when we as a team commit to doing what we need to do, it shows,” Stewart said.

The Eagles fell to 2-3 but are back in action on Wednesday against the Lincoln Hornets, who will be playing their first game of the season. The game is at Lincoln High as part of the Matador Classic.

“Physically, we are still getting there we have gotten a lot stronger and are able to run harder but we have to keep training, Stewart said. “Mentally, we have a little way to go. We are finally getting the mindset to keep playing hard no matter what we just have to focus on executing.”

Despite the third consecutive loss for Granite Hills seems on pace to clearly surpass last season’s win total, which it has currently equaled.

“In order for us to compete and give ourselves the best opportunity to win we will have to have patience on our offense and limit our turnovers,” Stewart said. “Making sure we communicate on defense and boxing out hard. If we focus on those key things we will be able to accomplish what we need to.”

HELIX 64, RAMONA 34 – The Highlanders evened their record at 1-1 with the win at Ramona.

Helix will be in the awkward position of playing all of its games on the road this season.

Despite renovations to the famed Helix gym during the offseason for basketball, the school hasn’t been able to secure plans to get bleacher seating into the refurbished building, forcing the Highlanders’ basketball teams to play all of their previously scheduled home games on the road for the second consecutive season.

Helix will play a Matador Classic game on Wednesday against Olympian in the Eagles’ gym.

Ramona fell to 1-6.

EL CAMINO 70, STEELE CANYON 19 – The Cougars lost to the Wildcats in a home game during the JV/Varsity Classic.

El Camino led 15-4 after one quarter and increased the advantage to 34-9 at halftime.

The Cougars fell to 0-3.
