BOYS: Patriots, Highlanders win

ENCINITAS – Christian High opened play in the Regional Rumble at Madison High School and came out with a 72-26 win versus San Dieguito Academy on Saturday.

“The guys came out focused and motivated to get this season started in the right direction,” Christian High head coach Tim Brown said. “Our defense played well and created a lot of easy opportunities for our offense.”

Vincent Warren, had 17 points, including a three-pointer, six rebounds, and four steals.

“My teammates fed me the ball early and I just played aggressive the whole game,” Warren said. “I attacked the basket and kept going to the line. I feel our team is definitely good enough to win the league and I feel that if we play aggressive and play at our pace the whole game, we’ll definitely have an opportunity to become league champs.”

Kobe Sanders, who has signed a letter of intent with Cal Poly SLO to play basketball for there next season, added 14 points, including a pair of threes, grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists.

Jake Tawhiao contributed 13 points, including a trey, grabbed four rebounds, had four assists and recorded four steals.

“We have two transfers – Jake Tawhiao and Vincent Warren – and they have meshed extremely well with our group of guys,” Brown said. “We have eight seniors and they are a really tight group.”

Patrick Roberts finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

Dasean Lynch came home with seven points, including a three-pointer. He also had two steals and two blocks.

Vincent Signorelli and Josh Meekins both had a three-pointer for the Pats.

Kobe Price contributed three points, while Michael Perez checked in with a bucket, as well.

Christian continues its pool play in the Regional Rumble at Madison High School on Tuesday, Nov 26, versus Canyon Crest at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 27, versus Del Oro at 10:30 a.m.

 

HELIX 73, SWEETWATER 56 – Keishawn Trice, a senior guard, scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half and senior Maurice Holmes had 19 points, including three three-pointers to lead Helix over the Red Devils in a San Diego Tip-Off game at Montgomery High.

Junior Xavier Otis added nine points for 16th-ranked Helix, including six in the first quarter.

Holmes scored nine points in the third quarter and finished with 10 rebounds, seven of his boards coming in the first half.

“There is no offseason,” Holmes said. “I work just as much during the season. Everyone works out in the offseason but if I still get my 500 shots up a day during the actual season, I will surpass a lot of my peers.”

After an opening loss to second-ranked St. Augustine, Helix has bounced back with a pair of impressive wins.

“I just work every day because I love the process,” Holmes said. “We have had two great wins and we will continue to get better this week before the Hiltop tournament. We are focused on winning that,” Holmes said.

Helix is off until Nov. 6 when it will face the Bucs for the second time in three games.

 

RANCHO BERNARDO 64, STEELE CANYON 32 – The Broncos led 14-2 out of the blocks in the win over the Cougars in a game played at Olympian High.

The Cougars’ T-Max Nyumah stopped the run with a bucket.

The Cougars trailed 21-8 at halftime.

Steele Canyon’s Joey Cleaves, Josh Tendvahl, and Antoine Walker had field goals in the third period but the Cougars couldn’t make much progress.

Walker added a field goal with three minutes to go in the third to pull Steele Canyon yo within 33-17.

Tendvahl made three-straight points, then Nyumah made a bucket to bring Steele to within 33-22.

Steele Canyon’s Alessandro Pabon had back-to-back field goals, one of them from three-point range, in the fourth quarter but the Cougars were trailing by 30.

 

 

LIBERTY CHARTER 62, DEL LAGO ACADEMY 37 – The Lions defeated the winless Firebirds for their first win of the season at the 5th Annual Del Lago Tip-Off Classic.

The teams are expected to mee again on Monday.
