Jerig had four steals.

The Sultans suffered just seven turnovers.

Santana will host Foothills Christian on Wednesday at 6 in an interesting East County matchup of recently successful programs.

MONTE VISTA 61, MISSION BAY 35 – Sophomore Meadow Delino scored 21 points to lead the Monarchs over the Buccaneers in the season opener.

Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez came out hot in the first quarter, scoring seven points, including a three-pointer for the Monarchs. She finished with 16 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Monte Vista sophomore Destiny Smith, along with seniors Jordan Barber and senior Vanessa Braun, helped the play in the third, combining for 12 points. Smith finished with 10 points, while Barber and Smith both had seven of Monte Vista’s 39 steals.

“The sophomore led our offense and the seniors led our defense,” Monte Vista head coach Sabrina Jimenez said. “My three sophomores are solid. They are a threat. The sophomores came out strong, out-working the competition and putting out some good numbers.”

The Monarchs stole the ball more than once every minute.

“I have a lot of players that can play tough, up-tempo, aggressive defense,” Jimenez said. “The pressure results in turnovers and that creates offense for us.”

The Monte Vista seniors combined for 30 rebounds, according to the coach. Maya Garcia led the team with nine caroms. She also had four assists.

“The girls came out and competed tonight,” Jimenez said. “My seniors’ leadership was phenomenal. Their intensity set the pace for the game.

“Everyone did their piece tonight. I had eight players score and everyone doing their part defensively. Mission bay came out tough, but we were able to tire them out with pressure in the second half.”

GRANITE HILLS 40, CALIPATRIA 15 – For the second straight season, the Eagles won their season opener, this time picking up the win over visiting Calipatria.

Six different Eagles scored, as Granite Hills equaled half their win total from last season.

Freshman guard Kyla Harris-Williams scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half for the Eagles.

Our standout player for tonight freshman Kyla Harris-Williams,” Eagle head coach Jermani Stewart said. “She gave us points due to aggressive ball pressure and finishing layups on her steals.”

Senior guard Blanca Hernandez came out firing with seven points in the first quarter, including a three-pointer.

“What really stood out today was the defensive tenacity,” Stewart said. “We were getting after every loose ball and hustling for the rebounds. Playing really solid defense is what gave us the push for an efficient offense.”

Sarah Ladu, a junior forward, had six points and eight rebounds.

“Sarah Ladu helped our team tremendously defensively and offensively on the boards,” Stewart said.

Granite Hills led 11-3 after one quarter and 19-6 at halftime. But it was a 14-2 run in the third that really put this one away.

“What we are going to have to work on will be turnovers,” Stewart said. “We had a lot of unforced turnovers that led to the other team scoring. I’m hoping we pick it up in our next game.”
