EL CAJON (10-25-15) — Visiting heavyweight Fullerton College virtually knocked out Grossmont College 44-20 Saturday (Oct. 24) at Mashin-Roth Field in a National Southern Conference encounter.
The Hornets (5-3, 2-2) boast a roster that includes 17 players at 280 pounds or more, including a dozen weighing 300-plus. They used that size advantage to blow holes in the Griffins defense, finishing with 398 yards in 60 plays.
Grossmont (2-6, 0-4) turned the ball over four times and suffered six sacks. Fullerton did not give the ball away and limited the Griffin attackers to two sacks.
The Hornets built a 28-0 lead before Grossmont finally got on the board via a 19-yard pass from TOMMY PISTONE to PAUL GOODEN with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.
Pistone, who was on the field a little more than one quarter, connected on 12 of 21 passes for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns in relief of starter MICHAEL CARRILLO.
“I felt like we got something going but we started clicking too late,” Pistone said.
Pistone drilled ADONIS TODD for an 11-yard touchdown with 11:02 remaining.
Just to show what a freakish game this was for the Griffins, a 2-point conversion attempt by Grossmont following Todd’s touchdown turned into a 97-yard fumble return by Fullerton’s Josh Nelson to add 2 points to the Hornets’ account.
Nelson was deadly all day as he earlier picked off a pass and returned it 45 yards to give the Hornets a 28-0 lead.
When it came to bad luck, the Griffins were right at the top of the list.
In spite of tight defensive coverage, Fullerton’s Jerome Gross grabbed a ricochet off the helmet of a Griffin defender on a pass from quarterback Colin Kearon and toted it 62 yards into the endzone for the Hornets’ final score with 10:10 to play.
Grossmont closed the scoring four minutes later when NEHEMIAH BROWN bolted 19 yards right up the middle. Pistone hit SERGIO BAILEY for the 2-point conversion.
Pistone, who has shared quarterback duties with Carrillo, is a sophomore out of Yuma Catholic where he posted back-to-back 3,000 yard seasons and led the Shamrocks to the state championship in his senior year.
“Like everybody, you want to start every game,” Pistone said. “But you have to be prepared as you would as a starter because you’re one play from going in.
“We finally got our passing touch going but the climb was too much uphill.”
Linebacker NICK GALATIS, one of the state’s top tacklers, recorded a team best 10 stops against Fullerton.
