HUNTINGTON BEACH – The 20th-ranked San Diego Mesa Olympians improved to 2-0 with a 51-33 win at Golden West on Saturday.
Mesa quarterback Thomas Yam passed for five touchdowns, including three to receiver Antwoine Ware, who caught 10 passes for 141 yards.
The game was back-and-forth in the first half with the Olympians holding a 23-21 lead on the boot of Raul Reyes’ 41-yard field goal as time expired before the teams headed into the locker room.
However, Mesa scored four of the next five touchdowns, including two by the Yam-Ware combination.
Dom McManus had a 6-yard touchdown reception to start the scoring just 2:14 into the game.
Ware also caught a 25-yard with 5:08 to go in the first quarter for a 13-7 Mesa lead.
Mesa’s Cade Hackey also caught one of Yam’s passes for a score with six minutes to go in the third quarter for a 37-21 advantage. Hackey had five receptions for 62 yards and an interception on defense.
Ranse Garner rushed for an 8-yard score in the fourth quarter for a 51-27 lead for the Jags.
Sammy Muniz and Jack Blanco also had interceptions for Mesa.
Nathaniel Espinoza had two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns for Golden West (0-2). Receiver Adam Armstrong had four catches for 90 yards and the two receiving touchdowns.
