SANTEE – Santana senior quarterback Nathan Temple passed for four touchdowns and ran for another, as Santana improved to 4-0 after blanking the visiting Sweetwater Red Devils, 48-0, on Friday the 13th.
Now, the Sultans, who are the top-ranked team in Division IV, will face another unbeaten team in Week 5 when they travel to face the upstart Montgomery Aztecs, which upset Kearny on Friday night.
On Friday, Temple threw for 284 yards on the evening and now has 14 touchdowns this season.
Four receivers caught the scoring throws, including two by senior Randy Smith, who had four receptions for 116 yards.
After a Sweetwater stop on Santana’s first possession, the Sultans scored the next five times they held the ball in the first half, surging to a 35-0 halftime lead.
Temple connected with running back Brooks Moutaw on a 29-yard pass play on Santana’s second possession for the first score of the game with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the first quarter.
Temple had a 2-yard touchdown run on Santana’s next possession following a 30-yard pass to senior Donnie Kelly.
Smith caught a pass and turned it into a 39-yard score on the Sultans’ next turn, giving the hosts a 21-0 lead after one period.
Temple then capped a 42-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown toss to junior Dean Landers for his fourth scoring pass of the first half.
With just over a minute to play in the first half, Temple and Smith connected for a score for the second time in the half on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Moutaw scored for a second time on a touchdown run in the third quarter with 4:15 left. He had 59 yards on the ground and 81 yards receiving.
Temple’s brother, Drew, passed for a 49-yard score in the fourth quarter to sophomore Ethan Wright.
Senior James Shaplin had an interception for the Sultans in the second half, which was played under a running clock.
Santana junior Jared Forster had six receptions for 44 yards.
Sweetwater got a sack from junior Charles Sanders to stop Santana’s initial possession of the game.
Before the game, a moment of silence was observed for Andrew Womack, a 15-year-old Sweetwater student who died on Wednesday during a diving accident in the waters off Sunset Cliffs.
Sweetwater (1-3) will travel to meet Mount Miguel (1-2) next Friday.
