CLAIREMONT – The defenses ruled the first three-quarters of the game on Friday night between the El Cajon Valley Braves and Clairemont Chieftains.
While it may not compare to some of the teams parading up and down the field these days, the matchup between the two teams remained in the balance and kept the throwback-style game interesting and the winner very much in doubt.
Finally, the teams traded a series of touchdowns in the fourth quarter but Clairemont took a 13-7 decision to snap the Braves’ three-game winning streak.
“As a team, the boys fought well and never let up,” El Cajon Valley head coach Nick Osborn said. “Clairemont is a hard-nosed team and they won a physical battle.”
The Chieftains started to gain their first points on a scoring drive that started in the third quarter.
Clairemont moved into scoring position and running back Isaac Vilchis ran it in from 1-yard out and a 7-0 lead.
The Braves’ defense, fittingly, helped the team answer later in the quarter, as senior Mario Jacobs recovered a fumble.
Our defense fought well in this game as you can see in the score,” Osborn said. “They continue to be stingy every week.”
El Cajon senior quarterback Joe Malone then scored on 17-yard quarterback keeper to the right side to tie the game.
However, late in the game, Christensen answered Malone’s score with a 1-yard touchdown.
The Braves amassed just 135 totals yards.
Damarius Hyde led the El Cajon Valley offense with 74 total yards on offense and 120 all-purpose yards.
El Cajon Valley was led defensively by Jacobs, who had five solo stops, including one for loss. He also saw the majority of the offensive snaps as the quarterback.
Derek Robinson also had five total tackles for the Braves.
The ECVHS secondary got defended passes by junior Tiger Khun and sophomore Daniel Jacobs.
“In this game we needed some guys to step up into new positions,” Osborn said. “Many mistakes on offense and a tough Claremont defense slowed us down on offense.”
The Braves will meet undefeated Vincent Memorial, the top-rated team in Division V, next Friday at Priest Field at 7.
“The beautiful thing about a loss after three wins is that it exposed some areas that need to be fixed,” Osborn said. “Us coaches and the boys all took ownership of those issues and we all plan to work at getting them back in order come Monday as we face a tough Vincent Memorial team.”
