STEELE CANYON 19, MADISON 14
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO – In order to legitimize the impact of the Steele Canyon Cougars defensive unit, you need to look no further than the job done on Madison senior running back Ke’onte Springs on Friday night.
Yes, Springs sprung for a 50-yard touchdown nearly mid-way into the first quarter to get the hosts on the board, 7-0, but the Steele Canyon defense never rested, despite being tested by Springs, and in turn, the seventh-ranked Cougars bested the ninth-ranked Warhawks, 19-14.
Meanwhile, senior Antoine Walker wrecked the Warhawks in more ways than one.
In the third quarter, Walker got in unblocked so fast on a 25-yard field goal attempt, it looked like he was the only one on the field that was moving.
In the fourth quarter, Steele Canyon senior quarterback Jeremy Mendez-Gal found Walker behind a pair of split defenders to reel in a 24-yard score with nine minutes remaining in the game, upping the advantage to 16-7. Mendez-Gal had 116 yards passing.
Walker also had an interception as the Cougar defense suffocated Madison for the most part.
Cougar junior running back Wesley Neely had a two-yard touchdown run around right tackle to close the lead to 7-6 with under a minute to go before halftime. He finished with 93 yards.
Steele Canyon’s David Martinez kicked a field goal in the third to make the score 9-7. He later added another field goal in the fourth to increase the lead 19-7.
The Cougars’ Viliamu-Ah-You Morse had a sack for Steele Canyon.
Christopher Carter had a 25-yard kick return for Steele in the first quarter.
Springs had a touchdown pass with two minutes to go in the game for the final margin.
Steele Canyon (2-0) will play at Bonita Vista next Friday.
Madison (1-1) will face 2-0 Granite Hills next week.
