ROUNDUP: Henry tied at top after first Western go-round

SCRIPPS RANCH (4-24-2019) – Patrick Henry needed a clutch hit in order to gain a share of the Western League lead.

Instead, they received a number of big hits, scoring three times in the 6th inning to capture Tuesday’s (Apr. 23) contest at Scripps Ranch.

Lauren Nett and Dez Patmon each pounded RBI singles, lifting the Patriots past the Falcons, 4-3.

Patrick Henry ends the first round of Western League play tied with Cathedral Catholic with 3-1 marks. Scripps Ranch stands third at 2-2.

Nett “netted” a game-tying RBI with a single through the infield to right field, scoring Hailey Jenks. Then with two outs, Patman then delivered a 2-run single for the lead, bringing home Kaiah Altmeyer and Nett. Again, a sharp roller through the right side found a hole.

Meanwhile, the right-side defense of the Patriots preserved the victory.

In the 6th, second baseman Jessica Dewitt snared a line drive, firing to Jenks at first base for an inning-ending double play.

Then Henry pitcher Olivia Gigante survived a leadoff triple and an error to field the final ground ball, tossing to Jenks to cap the triumph.

For Gigante, she only struck out three Falcons and yielded nine hits, but none when it mattered most.

For Patrick Henry (14-4 overall, 3-1 league), senior Laila Spracklen had the other RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the 5th, starting the comeback from an early 2-0 deficit.

Scripps Ranch (12-9, 2-2 league) saw first baseman Julia Cornelissen register three hits, while leadoff hitter Taylor Gray had a 2-run single in the 2nd.

MISSION BAY 5, CHRISTIAN 1: At Dawson Field,  the Patriots carried over a nice 2-3 showing at the Las Vegas Spring Jamboree with one of their better Eastern League showing of the season in falling to the second-place Buccaneers on Tuesday (Apr. 23).

Mission Bay took the first meeting, 14-8, two weeks ago.

Bucs pitcher Cassidy West struck out 15 batters in tossing a 3-hitter. The run was unearned.

Christian (4-15 overall, 0-3 league) received base hits from Harmony Blizard, Kate Manes and Audrey Shebloski.

“After the first inning, we held them to a 1-1 game,” Shebloski said. “Mission Bay’s pitcher, Cassidy West, is a Fresno State-commit and pitched very well today. Facing a D1-committed pitcher is going to be hard on a young team like us.”

Mission Bay (11-5, 3-1 league) received two hits from Cat Griffiths.

CRAWFORD 15, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 5: At FCHS, the Knights must be asking what happened after falling to the Colts by run rule, an opponent they thrashed 26-6 earlier in the season. At least Tuesday’s (Apr. 23) game was a non-league affair, as Foothills Christian remains a half-game behind first-place Orange Glen in the Pacific League.

In this clunker, six errors resulted in 13 unearned runs.

On offense for Foothills Christian (10-3), Carly Robbins batted 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, collected half of the Knights’ six hits.
