SAN DIEGO (4-17-2019) – Several softball clubs have been playing like it’s spring break vacation. However, the Patrick Henry Patriots limited the mindset to last just a single inning.

By the time Clairemont tallied five runs in the 7th inning, the Patriots already held a huge lead, taking a 10-7 decision over the Chieftains in Tuesday’s (Apr. 16) Western League action.

While many leagues started play early because spring break is a bit later than in most years, the City Conference ignored the holiday calendar but the Patriots were ready, overcoming a mild 2-0 deficit with 10 unanswered runs until the final frame.

The scoring spree was capped by a 2-run homer by Olivia Giganti, her second in as many games, returning her to the CIF San Diego Section race. With her seventh of the season. Giganti is one of eight players that are one behind season-long leader Staci Chambers of Granite Hills (8).

Patrick Henry, the top-rated team in Division II, is tied for first place with Scripps Ranch, each at 2-0.

A 5-run rally in the spelled the difference, a rally started when the first three batters reach (single, walk and hit by pitch).

Lauren Nett followed with a game-tying double. Edie Guthrie doubled but the runner needed to be held up at third base, but Dez Patman made it seven straight batters reaching with a go-ahead, RBI base hit.

Center fielder Laila Spracklen completed the rally with the third double of the inning, good for two additional runs.

For Patrick Henry (10-2 overall), Giganti, Nett and Guthrie were joined by catcher Savannah Sutton and second baseman Jessica DeWitt with two hits each, part of a 13-hit attack.

Clairemont (6-9, 0-1 league) designated player Maddie Taylor batted 2-for-3 with a walk, good for two RBI.

WEST HILLS 14, WESTVIEW 2: At Del Sur, Wolf Pack shortstop Alyssa Borbolla slugged a pair of double in a 3-for-4 outing at the plate, leading to Tuesday’s (Apr. 16) easy decision over the host Wolverines to cap Falcon Fiesta pool play action

West Hills registered multiple runs in four of six trips to the plate, while pitcher Kimie Brouard breezed in her most impressive outing of the season in firing a 1-hitter. She struck out seven.

Borbolla has joined by doubles from Mia Colabella, Dakotta Mershon and Sabrina Brown.

Meanwhile, Mershon, the second baseman, knocked in three runs, including two RBI in the 5th when the Pack collected four runs. The runs helped to invoke the run rule in the 6th.

For West Hills (7-13), Colabella matched Borbolla with three hits.

Winless Westview (0-16) clinched the poorest record in school history after going just 9-17 last season. Prior to that, the Wolverines had posted double-digit victories in 12 straight seasons.

GUAJOME PARK 11, LIBERTY CHARTER 1: At Brengle Terrace Park in Vista, the Frogs (2-7) made short work of the Lions to snap a 5-game losing streak

On the fourth pitch of the ballgame, Lions catcher Sarah Johnston bombed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field for a leadoff home run. However, the team collected just two additional hits off the Frogs pitcher.

Liberty Charter (5-9), leaders of the Summit League, return to league action Thursday in Chula Vista against Bayfront Charter. The game will be held at Mueller Charter’s all-weather field.
