East County Sports staff report
EL CERRITO (4-2-2019) – On Monday (Apr. 1), the Liberty Charter Lions corralled the Crawford Colts behind 15 hits, taking an easy 15-3 decision in a game called after six innings.
Liberty Charter (9-4-1 overall), winners of nine straight, scored four times to start the ballgame, then added seven more in the 4th to assume full control.
Crawford (officially Will C. Crawford High School) fell to 1-10. The Colts scored twice in the first to make it a 4-2 game.
Manuel Lopez pitched 5 innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out 12 batters for the win.
Freshmen Isaiah Hilke and Orion Bearce both tripled and drove in a pair of runs. Senior Vicente Perez also drove in two.
Joshua Gastelum and Hilke both had three hits and scored three runs for LCHS. Lopez also scored four times.
When the CIF San Diego Section was created for the 1960-61 school year, Crawford High School was a power in baseball. Perhaps, the finest ballclub in the early 1960s.
The Colts reached the championship seven times during that first decade, capturing the section title four times (1962, 64-65, ’68) under legendary coach Bill Sandback, who was named the California State Coach of the Year by CalHiSports following his fourth crown.
