Hyde shutout slows Sultans; Lions win eighth straight

EL CAJON (3-29-2019) – Grossmont High pitcher Jack Hyde carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning, finishing by equaling his top performance of the season by firing a two-hit shutout to skewer front-running Santana, 3-0, in Thursday’s (Mar. 28) Grossmont Hills “Super League” ballgame.

Hyde was supported by a leadoff home run by Keoni Valdez in the bottom of the 1st inning, plus a 2-run hit from John Odom, gaining a share of first place.

Hyde carried a perfect game into the 4th when a one-out walk ended his budding masterpiece. He later reached the 7th after facing just 19 batters — one above the ultimate minimum — before the Sultans’ Glowacki brothers —

Tyler and Brandon — registered consecutive lead singles to left field.
Meanwhile, the Hillers only needed to wait for the three pitches to turn on their offense.

Valdez, the center fielder, sent a 1-1 pitch over the barrier in left field. It was all the run support Hyde needed, yet there were few complaints from the Grossmont bench when Odom, the first baseman, tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 6th.

Santana thought they stayed in the game after pitcher Tyler Glowacki picked off a runner at first base. However, after Grossmont re-loaded the bases, Odom came through with a key, two-out grounder that swiftly steamed through the left side to score both Brodie Romero and Isaiah Gomez.

Hyde finished with four strikeouts with just one walk, lowering his ERA to a stellar 0.38 with his fifth straight triumph. Hyde (5-1) earlier stopped Cathedral Catholic with a 2-hit shutout.

Grossmont (9-5 overall, 2-1 GHL) received two hits each from Valdez, Romero and right fielder Max Ford.

Santana (7-6, 2-1 GHL) saw Tyler Glowacki reach base twice with a single and a walk. He also earned a complete-game despite the loss, striking out six batters.

LIBERTY CHARTER 11, ARMY-NAVY 6: At Lemon Grove, the Lions erupted for five runs in the 6th inning to mount an 11-2 lead, racing past the visiting Warriors (2-3) in Thursday’s (Mar. 29) non-league, rain makeup contest.

Liberty freshman Isaiah Hilke continued his torrid hitting pace, driving in five runs on a pair of hits, including a double.

But he also allowed just one unearned run (two runs allowed) over six innings, striking out nine.

Senior Manny Lopez doubled and triple to finish with a pair of RBI for the Lions.

Freshman Michael Shallock walked twice, scored twice and had two RBI.

The triumph gave Liberty Charter (8-4-1) its eighth-straight victory, including a sweep of the 2-game, season-series sweep over the visitors from Carlsbad.

The Lions can establish a school-record win streak with road wins next week at Crawford (Apr. 1) and El Cajon Valley (Apr. 4).
