MEN: SBVC closing in on another division title

SAN BERNARDINO (2-9-2019) – When the California Community College Athletic Association decided to dissolve the Foothill Conference following the 2015-16 season, its member schools were scattered to various exiting conference.

Pacific Coast Athletic Conference members must wonder why San Bernardino Valley was placed in its circuit.

On Friday (Feb. 8), the Wolverines took another step toward its third consecutive PCAC North Division crown since realignment after taking down San Diego Miramar, 89-59. SBVC took both halves by identical 15-point margins.

Roman Silva tallied 12 of his game-high 19 points in the first half. Silva also grabbed 9 rebounds, as San Bernsrdino Valley (19-5 overall, 6-0 PCAC) held a 41-32 advantage on the boards.

Four other members of the Wolverines also scored in double figures, including 18 from off the bench by Arian Azemi. The others were K’Lon Williams (16 points), Damani Washington (15), and Nathan Pendarvis (11), who also had 10 boards.

Miramar (13-11, 2-4 PCAC), which made less than one-third of its shot (19-for-58), received 18 points from Blake Seits, while Artis Chapman added 13. However, the remainder of the Jets made just 8-of-29 shots (27.6 percent) from the floor.

The Wolverines now hold a 2-game lead with four contests remaining over second-place Mt. San Jacinto, the 3-time North Division titlist after they joined the circuit in 2012-13 before SBVC arrived.

Mt. San Jacinto 103, MiraCosta 82: At San Jacinto, ached triple-figures for the second time against the Spartans this season to barely stay in the PCAC North race. <SJC still needs to defeat SBVC and get someone else to also beat the Wolverines to somehow acquire a share of the crown.

The gritty Spartans grabbed a 42-41 halftime lead, but the hosts roared back with 62 points in the second half, including 34 points over the final 11 minutes.

Eagles reserve Justin Holiday registered 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half, while guard C.J. Hyder added 22 points for Mt. San Jacinto (19-4 overall, 4-2 PCAC).

For MiraCosta (11-13, 2-4 PCAC), guard Devyian Roberson poured in a game-best 23 points, going 14-for-14 at the foul line.

Desert 81, Palomar 66: At Palm Desert, Roadrunners guard Sam Skipper recorded 14 of his game-best 18 points in the first half, when College of the Desert mounted a 20-point lead to shoot down the Comets.

Shooting 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the floor, Desert built a massive 47-27 halftime re leaving the rest of the ballgame to the reserves.

Also for COD (12-12 overall, 3-3 PCAC), Gunnar Mogolis registered 15 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in a strong two-way effort.

Palomar (7-16, 1-5 PCAC) saw Michael Chatman score 25 points, while Jamario Harris added 21, but the rest of the Comets were just 9-for-25 (36 percent) from the floor.

PCAC South

San Diego Mesa 84, Imperial Valley 69: At Kearny Mesa, the host Olympians all-but-wrapped third place in the PCAC South Division after completing the season sweep of the Arabs.

Mesa (8-15 overall, 4-2 PCAC) saw Aren Thomas and Adrian Lee lead the ballclub with 18 points, while Cameron Hill added 17 in a balanced attack.
Imperial Valley (9-14, 2-4 PCAC) was traveling so its stats were not available at press time. Expect them to be posted late Saturday afternoon.

San Diego City 75, Grossmont 49: In Downtown San Diego, the host Knights defense limited the Griffins to just 23.3 percent (7-for-30) shooting in the second half, pulling away for a season sweep in Friday’s (Jan. 8) ballgame at Harry West Gym.

City forward Robby Robinson registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Joseph Riley added 15 points for the second-place Knights (14-10 overall, 5-1 PCAC).

For the griffins (3-21, 0-6 PCAC), Jamal Johnson off the bench to record a team-best 12 points.

Southwestern 80, Cuyamaca 41: At Chula Vista, the South Division leading Jaguars (20-4 overall, 6-0 PCAC) swamped the Coyotes (4-20, 1-5 PCAC) for the second time this season. No game report was filed by either school.
