SAN MARCOS (2-7-2019) – The 13th-ranked Palomar Comets raced to a 50-17 halftime lead, stomping San Diego City, 84-46, on Wednesday’s (Feb. 6) final day of the North-South Challenge in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
The Palomar reserves combined for 46 points to match the visiting Knights in a one-sided affair at Palomar Dome.
For the Comets (19-6), Morgan Heise led with 15 points. She also grabbed 7 rebounds. However, the leading rebounder was Erica Weitzel, who grabbed 8 boards from off the bench.
Three other players for Palomar — Taylor Williams (12 points), Clarissa Taite (12) and Sara Ahmadpour (11) — also reached double figures in scoring.
For San Diego City (9-14), Alissa Wolfblack led her side with 15 points, while reserve Mariah Wonders added 12 points.
No. 10 Mt. San Jacinto 77, Grossmont 44: At San Jacinto, The defending state champion Eagles, which just returned to the state Top 10 this week, won at home in this small town just north of Hemet in SW Riverside County.
MSJC (20-6), which led 25-6 through the first period, saw five players reach double figures in scoring, led by
Meanwhile, Sharonda Edwards came off the bench to add 17 points for the Eagles.
For Grossmont (4-16), Drew Mendoza and Tila Whitaker shared club scoring laurels with 12 points each. For Whitaker, a 2015 graduate of West Hills HS, it was her first contest of the season.
Mendoza also led the Griffins in assists and steals.

Southwestern 89, Desert 73: At Palm Desert College of the Desert (1-20) received some good contributions from their starters, but the PCAC South
Desert would go into half time down, 45-26, then win the third quarter, 28-22, but too many turnovers cost the Roadrunners down the stretch, as Southwestern scored 30 points off of turnovers. Falling short on the boards also proved to be costly, as Desert lost “The Battle of the Boards,” 62-51.
For Southwestern,
COD sophomore guard Vanessa Madera had her second-best scoring performance of the season, with 19 points on 5-of-14 shots from beyond three-point range and going 4-for-4 at the foul line. Madera was also the team leader in assists.
Meanwhile, Zuri Outlaw, another sophomore guard, also had her second-best scoring night of the season with 16 points, coming on 6-of-13 shooting and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
