Hawks teams full of Life in sweep

EL CAJON (1-18-2019) – San Diego Christian College snapped a pair of long losing streaks Thursday (Jan. 17), sweeping a pair of basketball games against Life Pacific College of San Dimas in Golden State Athletic Conference action at Grossmont College.

The Hawks meet downed the Golden Eagles, 81-70, ending a 5-game skid. Meanwhile, the SDCC women also defeated LSU, 66-41, for their first triumph since late November

Men

San Diego Christian 81, Life Pacific 70: Senior guard Derek Novsek poured in 23 points, one of four Hawks scoring in double figures, to help the hosts pull away late in a game tied at 41-all with 18:48 remaining.

Hayden Fredrick, another senior guard, also performed strongly, finishing with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Down 41-49, The Hawks Jared Nyivih (6-for-8, 12 points), hit a layin to get even, igniting a 10-0 run to give the Hawks the lead for keeps.  Nyivih’s play allowed SDCC to shoot 55 percent from the floor.

La Sierra twice moved to within a point, but Novsek responded both times.

At 55-54 with 9:32 left, Novsek bombed a 3-point goal. Later at 60-59 with 6 minutes to go, Novsek made two foul shots, then Nyivih scored in the paint to a 16-5 run to end it.

With the victory, the Hawks moved to 5-10. Life Pacific fell to 8-8. Both sides are 2-5 in GSAC play.

Women

San Diego Christian 66, Life Pacific 41: The Hawks snapped a 13-game losing skid after 12 players contributed points to thrash the visiting Golden Eagles, giving SDCC head coach Shawn Chaffin his first GSAC triumph.

Hannah Myers led the Hawks with 14 points. The freshman guard also grabbed 14 rebounds and five assists for a double-double. Meanwhile, senior guard Kaitlyn McKinney hit 5-of-6 shots to add 10 points in the victory.

San Diego Chrisian trailed after one period, then out-scored the Golden Eagles, 41-16, over the next two periods to win handily. The scoring streak was ignited by a 12-0 run after trailing 21-19 in the second period. The stretcvh featured a layup from Henriette Gahmig. Shayleen Toehe added a triple with Erica McCarter ended the half with a jumper for the 10-point lead.

San Diego Christian, both men and women, play at Westmont on Saturday.
