CHULA VISTA (1-9-2019) – Both the girls of Eastlake and Bonita Vista high schools don’t take this rivalry as seriously as they have had for the last several years
The great thing about a rivalry is that both teams take turns winning.
Unfortunately for the Titans from Eastlake High, they would not only be defeated but pummeled by the Barons of Bonita Vista.
The irony is the Titans won the tip-off and an ensuing 4-0 advantage. That would all change in the blink of an eye
Bonita Vista would score
One of the many contributors in this unlikely offensive attack on behalf of the Barons was ISABEL RECTOR, who had a career-high scoring of 16 points.
“She was a playmaker tonight, she definitely made a difference,” said Bonita head coach Tristan Lamb.
One of the key scorers, as usual, was ANNETH GRIJALBA, with 10 points in the miraculous first quarter, finishing with 14 total on the evening
The second quarter was more competitive for both squads as they settled in and the Titans made key adjustments. The Barons only amassed an 18-15 advantage in the second quarter, although still held a lopsided 53-19 lead at the half.
Bonita never let up, including defensively, holding the Titans to only 13 total points in the second half.
The Lady Barons were just too prepared and on point to be stopped. A team on a mission wanting to send a clear message to all opponents that they are for real.
Bonita would tack on another 30 points to seal the deal to finish off the Titans, 82-32.
Defeating any opponent by 50 is an impressive feat.
“The girls played hard from the start to finish tonight,” Lamb said. “They really took the rivalry serious as does Eastlake, as they have shown us in the past.
“We had a great shooting night hitting 13 three-pointers. We shoot like that we are hard to beat.”
“We knew our game plan coming in and we just executed it and that allowed to get scoring opportunities,” Rector said. “My teammates and I think that really helped us to score that many points.
“I think it’s a win that really showed what we could do as a team. I believe this is a big win because it set the tone for our league games. I believe that this team is one of the greatest teams I’ve played.
“We all support each other on and off the court and we motivate each other on and off the court, and we motivate each other to work harder.
“We come together when we need to and we all just have that bond between us. We also have an amazing coaching staff who are always guiding and pushing us to be better so with all of that I definitely think we have what it takes to win league and CIF.”
The Barons (7-8, 1-0) will play a home league game on Friday, January 12 at 6 p.m. versus Olympian (9-8, 0-1).
Bonita Vista is looking to win their second-straight league game.
