OCEANSIDE (1-4-2019) – The rollercoaster ride that is Miramar College basketball took another hairpin turn.

When the Jets scratch their way into the Southern California rankings, they los. Whenever they feel slighted when unranked, they win.

But to do both on consecutive days?

The Jets, coming off an impressive, final-minute victory ocer Antelope Valley, looked like they should be moved back into the rankings.

However, less than 24 hours later, No. 4 San Bernardino Valley definitively erased those thoughts after blowing out Miramar, 90-67, in Thursday’s (Jan. 3) semifinals of the Clete Adelman Classic at MiraCosta College.

The Wolverines (10-5) whipped the Jets by pouting in 54 first-half points, gaining a berth in the championship against L.A. Pierce, which slid past San Diego City, 65-59.

Miramar (11-6) has been clutch all season in close ballgames. But when the contest is one-sided, games cab get ugly. It’s the ballclub’s lack of consistency which makes SDVC the favorite when Pacific Coast Athletic Conference commences next week.

The difference -maker may be San Bernardino Valley’s Roman Silva, who led on both ends of the court with game-highs of 21 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. Included were 17 first-half points to allow the Wolverines to grab a quick lead of 36-25.

Damani Washington added 16 points for SBVC, Brandon Thompson scored 14 from off the bench, while starters Nathan Pendarvis and Eric Hancik each added 11.

For the Jets, Artis Chapman scored a team-best 22 points — his second-best effort of the season — but most of it was cosmetic coming later in the second half. The only other Miramar player in duble figures was Blake Seits with 12, but coming on poor 3-for-11 shooting.

Miramar, coming off a last-place finish at the Cuyamaca Tournament, have now lost 4-of-5. They will meet San Diego City in Friday’s third-place contest.

L.A. Pierce 65, San Diego City 59: Contrary to Miramar, San Diego City has done poorly in close ballgames this season, losing another tight one in falling to the Brahmas of Woodland Hills in the second semifinal of the MiraCosta Tournament at Crosswoods Gymnasium.

Neither team the bigger than five points until the final seconds, when Pierce made its foul shots down the stretch.

Tied at 57-all, Brahmas guard Max Edwards hit a go-ahead jumper with 58 seconds remaining, then after a City miss, Anthony McIntyre scored inside for a 61-57 advantage with 28 seconds left. McIntyre also converted a pair of foul shots with 19 to go for a 6-point lead — the largest by either side.

McIntyre finished with 23 points, while Edward finished with 15 to lead the Brahmas. They also received 10 rebounds from Kevin Fassu.

For San Diego (8-8), Robby Robinson led with 19 poinys and 9 boards, while Adrian Byrd-Jelinek came off then bench to register 12 points and 5 boards.

MiraCosta 79, Barstow 48: The tournament host Spartans ran past the hapless Vikings in one of Wednesday’s (Jan. 3) consolation contests.

For MiraCosta (8-8), Devyian Roberson tallied a team-best 16 points, helping to build a 41-21 halftime cushion. In addition, both Thomas Donati and Donald Smith came off the bench to score 10 points.

For Barstow (1-15), Josh Tawhiao was the top scorer with 8 points on 3-for-11 shooting. The Vikings shot 18-of-54 (33 percent) shots and lost the turnover battle, 25-12.

MiraCosta meets Antelope Valley for the consolation title, while Barstow meets Grossmont in the seventh-place game.

Antelope Valley 80, Grossmont 45: The Marauders, fresh off their upset loss on Day 1 of the Adelman Classic, took no prisoners from the Griffins in the romp. Part of their improvement was a season-high 24 assists.

Jalen Riley led Antelope Valley (7-10) with 17 points and 5 assists, while g points and 7 assists.

The lone bright spot for Grossmont (1-15) was Lamon Hudson and his 20 points, 7 boards and 4 assists.
