EL CAJON (12-31-2018) – Both local schools – Grossmont and Southwestern community colleges – were already eliminated following the first two days of the 31st annual Grossmont Holiday Tournament of women’s basketball.

However, there were three ballgames held Sunday (Dec. 30), including the championship contest, which set a record for margin of victory:

Championship

L.A. Trade-Tech 79, Cuesta 39: The Lady Techsters, ranked only behind unbeaten Moorpark in the state rankings, set a tournament record by capturing the title game by 40 points in a wipeout of Cuesta to cap the 31st annual Grossmont Holiday Invitational.

**Cheyenne Givens and Cheyenne McKinnie were named to the All-Tournament team.**

Trade-Tech (15-2) led 35-5 after just one-quarter of play. The 40-point margin of victory snapped the record of 36 set by Santa Monica when they won the state championship in 1980 when this tournament was still held at Mesa College.

Cheyenne Givens tallied 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first period, hitting 8-of-10 shots from the floor. Teammates Cheyenne McKinnie and Deonshanae Sadler chipped in 14 points each.

McKinnie was named tournament MVP and Givens was also named to the All-Tournament team.

For Cuesta (10-8), Madison Collins led with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Third Place

Cypress 62, Victor Valley 55: After building an 11-point lead in the first half, the Chargers (8-6) still needed to hustle all contest to finally jeep the pesky Rams at bay in the third-place contest.

After being held scoreless in the first period, Cypress starting center Christa Evans registered 8 of her 12 points in the second period to mount a 35-29 halftime lead. In addition, Janei-Ruby Fuamatu came off the bench to tally 13 of her team-best 17 points before the break.

For Victor Valley (5-11), five players scored in double figures, including 15 by guard Cierra Steemer, and 14 from off the bench by Heavens Bonner.

Among three players scoring 10, Kendal Clark-Davis also led with 16 rebounds. However, the comeback was thwarted due to 29 team turnovers by Victor Valley.

Fifth Place

Citrus 57, Santa Ana 46: The Owls from Glendora sprinted to a 17-6 lead and were never caught by the Lady Dons of Orange County in the consolation final of the 31st annual Grossmont Holiday Invitational.

Citrus won with defense, limiting the free-shooting Santa Ana side to make just 4-of-25 (16 percent) shots from the arc.

Citrus (9-5) received a double-double by forward Kyannie Brown, who led with 24 points and 13 rebounds. In addition, Diana Navarro registered 10 points and 7 assists.

Santa Ana (4-9) received 13 points and 9 boards from Lexi Ross, while Nyla Bivens came off the bench to register 10 points and 8 boards, but the starting guards of the Lady Dons were just 2-for-14 on triples.
