SANTA MARIA (12-30-2018) – The Palomar College Comets nearly took a big bite, but fell just short in pulling a major upset as state-ranked Allan Hancock College held on to a 65-64 decision in Saturday’s (Dec. 29) championship semifinals of the AHC Holiday Classic.
Allan Hancock mounted a 10-point lead in the first half, but the Comets nearly fought all the way back.
Palomar forward Anthony Routh made the first of two foul shots with 57 seconds remaining to close the gap to two points, but neither could score the rest of the way, as the host Bulldogs twice turned the ball over, then fouled with one
For Allan Hancock (12-2), Grant Johnson and Mike Mensah each scored a team-high 13 points, while Trenton Mitchell added 11 points and a team-high 6 rebounds.
Palomar (6-8) received 16 points from Jamario Harris, one of four Comets to score in double figures. The others were Marek Sullivan (14), Antonio Green (11) and Routh (10).
On Sunday, Palomar can assume second place in the round-robin event when they attempt to defeat unbeaten Cuesta. If the Cougars win, they would tie for first with the host Bulldogs, who only need to beat a lowly San Jose City ballclub.
Cuyamaca Tournament
San Diego Mesa 95, Miramar 93 (OT): For just the fourth time since the Miramar Jets commenced their men’s basketball program for the 2006-07 season, they fell for just the fourth time ever to crosstown district rival Mesa, this time in an overtime affair in Saturday’s (Dec. 29) consolation semifinals of the Cuyamaca Tournament.
Among the four victories for the Olympians, two have come in an extra period, including the second game of the series back in the Jets’ debut campaign.
This was also the highest-scoring contest in the 19-game series between the schools.
