GIRLS: Vaqueros in tourney title game

LAKESIDE – The El Capitan Vaqueros advanced to the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic NAIA Division championship game with a 65-26 win over Morinville, of Alberta, Canada, on Friday evening.

The Vaqueros play in the title game at 8 a.m. on Saturday against fellow pool winner Mira Costa. The contest will be held at Del Norte High School.

Sophomore MACKENZIE CURTIS scored all of her 20 points in the first half for El Cap.

“Everyone did there job and the next pass was there,” Curtis said. “People stepped up like JACEY DANKS and killed it.

“We came out better than we have the whole tournament.”

Senior JORDAN GRANDY added 14 points, including four three-pointers.

“We didn’t have our leading point guard playing so I knew that I would have to step in and fill in her role,” Grandy said.

El Capitan freshman TIFFANY BICKFORD added 11 points.

Danks, a sophomore center, led the Vaqueros with eight rebounds.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 47, SAN DIEGO 41 – The Knights earned the win over a stubborn Caver team at the Gold Crown Tournament at Bonita Vista High.

“We got a scrappy win,” Foothills Christian head coach JOEY TURK said.  “(We) Didn’t play well but we grinded it out. We played really tired today. We will take the win.”

The Knights improved to 10-5. FCHS is third in the latest Division IV computer power rankings.

EL CAJON VALLEY 57, CLAIREMONT 17 – The Braves outscored the Chieftains 17-6 in the first quarter in a Bonita Vista Tournament game and improved to 10-3 on the season.

The Braves entered the contest fifth in the San Diego CIF Division IV power rankings.

HARVARD-WESTLAKE 68, CHRISTIAN 64 – The Patriots turned in a strong performance in defeat against the state’s 41st-rated team in the West Coast Jamboree.

The Wolverines capitalized on 25 Patriot fouls, which resulted in 33 free throws for Harvard-Westlake.

The Patriots were whistled for 15 fouls after halftime, while the Wolverines were called for just five fouls.

The Patriots led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 34-33 at halftime.

“I’m so proud of my girls,” Christian head coach VICKIE CARRINGTON said. “Allie Carreon, Simone James, Kristin Williams, Amaya Howard, Yesenia Smith, Zoe Nordling, and Jasmyn Crawford really stepped up for us.”

The Wolverines held a 50-44 advantage after three quarters.

“All of our girls on the bench played their role, worked very hard and did what we needed them to do when we called on them,” Carrington said. “(I’m) especially excited about Serene Weckback. She has the ability to be a big time player. She has some work to do but is truly an asset to our team.”

Said Weckback: “The transition for me has been very beneficial and I have a lot to prove to my new team and new coaches. I am continuing to work hard every day to get to where I can really make a difference for my team.”

SERRA 80, GROSSMONT 61 – The Grossmont Foothillers weren’t themselves in an 80-61 defeat to Serra in a matchup of two of the top records in the section.

The game was part of the Bonita Vista Tournament.

Serra defends against Grossmont on Friday night.

The Conquistadors, a young team who are ninth in the county power rankings, led 38-31 at halftime, then pulled away in the third quarter.

“The first half was great,” Grossmont head coach GRACE CAMPBELL said. “Missed free throws and missed layups. (Marissa) Giles and Athena Sotelo are not 100 percent and Sarah Henry is off.”

Serra eventually led 56-36 and entered the fourth quarter with a 66-46 advantage.

Grossmont fell to 10-2, while the Conquistadors improved to 6-1.

DOWNEY 44, MOUNT MIGUEL 32 – The Matadors went up against a tough opponent in the Vikings at the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic.

Both squads were inside the top 50 teams in the state coming into the contest.

The Matadors trailed just 22-20 at halftime, but Mount Miguel went into a rare scoring drought, as Downey outscored them, 12-1, in the third period.

Mount Miguel fell to 12-3, while Downey improved to 13-3.

The Matadors were the top-rated team in the section last week according to computer power rankings, but fell to the second spot this week, behind La Jolla Country Day.

GODINEZ 38, SANTANA 24 – Freshman BELLA TERRY had eight points and eight rebounds for the Sultans, who led 15-14 at halftime.

However, the Sultans were shutout in the third quarter of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic Prep Division game.

“We did a pretty good job in the first half of the game containing the other team and putting up shots,” Terry said. “Unfortunately, the third quarter just didn’t go our way. Everyone played hard, I can’t wait to start league and battle our way to the top.”

Senior AALIYAH STONE had 12 rebounds for the Sultans.

“I’m very proud of the team and our progress so far,” Terry said.

Santana fell to 4-12 after dropping their second game of the day, a 34-33 defeat to Golden Valley, of Merced, in the tournament nightcap.

GOLDEN VALLEY 67, VALHALLA 25 – The Lady Norsemen fell to the Golden Valley team from Santa Clarita at the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic.

MARANATHA 82, GRANITE HILLS 7 – Maranatha from Pasadena picked up a win over the Eagles.
