OCEANSIDE (12-16-2018) – In their first multiple overtime ballgame in nearly six years, the third time was the charm for San Diego Miramar College.
After missing potential game-winning shots to end regulation and the first overtime, the Jets came through late in the second overtime to nip visiting Irvine Valley College, 85-81, on Day 2 of the PCAC-Orange Empire Conference at MiraCosta College’s Crosswoods Gymnasium.
Miramar guard Damien Miller sank a tie-breaking jumper while being fouled with 1:17 remaining in the second extra session, hitting the foul shot for an 80-78 lead. And when the
Rian Narra added a layin on the press break with 12 seconds to go to polish the victory. Nara scored 6 of his 11 points in the final 5-minute period.
It was Miramar’s first double-overtime contest since Feb. 1, 2013, when the Jets outlasted host San Diego City, 100-92.
For the Jets (10-2), three players — Miller, Chapman and Blake Seits — shared scoring laurels with 16 points each. Chapman (11 rebounds) and Miller (10 boards) also registered double-doubles.
For the Lasers (3-10), reserve Geoff Salas, who is listed as a forward, drilled 7-of-11 shots for triples, finishing with a career-high and game-best 32 points. IVC has now dropped six straight.
Cypress 74, MiraCosta 56: At Oceanside, the No. 9 Chargers swept this PCAC-Orange Empire Conference Challenge game by topping the host Spartans at Crosswoods Gymnasium on Saturday (Dec. 15).
MiraCosta trailed most of the way but moved to within 37-34 early in the second half. However, Cypress responded with a 20-7 run, then MiraCosta was held to just a single basketball over an 8:10 span late to pull away.
For the Chargers (8-3), Mike McGee scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.
The Spartans (7-6), guard Devyian Roberson led with 14 points and 6 assists, while Marcus Foster added 12 points and 4 steals.
Mt. San Jacinto 106, San Diego Mesa 74: At San Jacinto (just north of Hemet), the host Eagles shots 55 percent from the floor — their second-best effort of the season — to vacate the Olympians in a PCAC North-South pairing.
MSJC guard Deshawn Millington nailed 12-of-17 shots for his game-high 26 points, while Justin Holiday tallied 16 from off the bench.
For Mesa, Cameron Hill scored 20 bench points on 8-for-10 shooting, but the rest of his teammates combined to shoot just 19-for-55 (34 percent) from the floor.
Mt. San Jacinto (13-1) captured its eighth straight contest, with the lone loss coming against No. 1 Fullerton.
Meanwhile, Mesa remained winless through 10 starts, although the Olympians put up a good fight for a half, trailing only 50-40 at the intermission.
Fullerton 83, Grossmont 56: Speaking of Fullerton, the Hornets made a rare trip to the county, keeping the Griffins winless in Saturday’s (Dec. 15) non-conference affair in El Cajon.
Fullerton shot 54 percent from the field, including 14-for-28 (50 percent) from beyond the arc.
For the Hornets (12-1), four o the five starters scored in double figures. Among the sharpshooters from distance was guard
Grossmont (0-13) had a breakout outing by reserve Jamal Johnson, a freshman forward, who was the team’s leading scorer with 12 points while also finishing second in rebounds.
“We’re definitely coming together as a team as far as chemistry is concerned,” Grossmont’s Josh Burton said. “We’re better now than when we started. We’ve also had a very tough schedule but I believe it’s going to prepare us well for
“I love the energy our subs bring to the floor when they check in. Jamal and Marquelle are definitely growing more comfortable on the floor and it’s showing in my opinion.
“These past few games he’s been emphasizing that we need to control what we do right now and after we do that we can start focusing on the opposing teams.”
Southwestern 91, Santiago Canyon 83: The Santiago Canyon College Hawks from the City of Orange finished with a weekend split on their trip to San Diego County.
After handing Cuyamaca (1-11) their biggest loss of the season on Friday (Dec. 14), 92-51, Santiago Canyon (8-5) saw its 6-game winning streak snapped by the Jaguars (10-4) in a non-conference game Saturday (Dec. 15) in Chula Vista.
For Cuyamaca, the 41-point pasting was the school’s worst since a pair of blowouts last season. The Coyotes fell to San Diego City by 87 points (123-37) ad by 65 points to the Hawks (114-49), although those two games were on the road.
No information was reported by either Cuyamaca or Southwestern
