2018 EAST COUNTY PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

SPRING VALLEY (11-28-2018) – Enter new skipper SABRINA JIMENEZ, enter a new and improved group of Monte Vista Lady Monarchs.
Monte Vista won a second-straight nailbiter, 48-45, over visiting Crawford on Tuesday night.
“My team has speed and I capitalize on our strengths along with basketball fundamentals and my girls delivered tonight,” said Jimenez, whose Monarchs are just two games into the season.
Coming off an edging of Castle Park (1-3), 50-49, over two weeks ago, the Monarchs are looking to definitely be a contender for a Grossmont Valley League title, and hopefully, remain a top 5 contender in Division 4 play.
Folks, it is early, but check these Monarchs out. They are very confident, quick, and athletic.
The hero on this particular evening against the visiting Colts was senior SARA TAHA, who dropped 27 of the total 48 points dropped by the Monarchs. Taha also had an amazing 15 total rebounds and a pair of thefts.
“We played as a team, very consistent for all four quarters,” Jimenez.
As Monte Vista had to shake off the holiday rust early, they would take control of the contest early with a baseball score of 8-6, as Monte Vista lit up the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter.
Taha would then take over, scoring 9 of the 17, and an exciting 25-25 tie at the intermission.
“Towards the end, we were up by eight, but we allowed them to creep up and make it closer,” Jimenez said. “But we
definitely played hard and fast to win another close one.
“We made our layups as we should tonight, and if we continue to score, that is the key to our success and having the ability for sure to compete for a possible league title.
“Crawford was aggressive but we focused on their talent and created our game plan accordingly. Tonight we had six of our girls scoring, and we only have nine, so if we continue that route we will be successful, and we have the ability to press, which makes basketball more fun to watch as well.”
The 2-0 Monarchs will have a great early-season test as they will host the red-hot Foothills Christian Knights (5-0) at Monte Vista. This tip-off will be on Friday, November 30 at 6 p.m.
