LA MESA – The Del Norte Nighthawks came to town sporting the county’s best overall record at 7-0, but the Grossmont Foothillers put a stop to that winning streak on Friday night, taking over the game in the third quarter en route to a 66-55 win at the Grossmont Thanksgiving Tournament.
Del Norte led at halftime after jumping out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, but Grossmont outscored the visitors, 25-10, in the third quarter to take a 46-38 lead after three periods.
Junior guard LACHIN BEKIROV continued his strong start to the season with 21 points and five rebounds for the Hillers.
Del Norte hits back to back three-pointers late to cut Grossmont’s lead to 58-50, 1:11 left in the game.
Grossmont outscored the Nighthawks, 45-27, in the second half, Bekirov scored 11 points in the second half.
The Foothillers made 16-of-20 free throws.
DAMARI CRAWFORD had 14 points, five assists and five steals for Grossmont.
The Foothillers had 14 assists as a team.
NOAH O’CLANCY had 13 points for the Foothillers.
Del Norte leads Grossmont 15-8 after the first quarter, but the Hillers finished with just 10 turnovers.
Grossmont will get another chance to knock off an undefeated opponent on Saturday when it faces the Westview Wolverines.
UNIVERSITY CITY 65 MONTE VISTA 56 – The Centurions jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but the Monarchs fought back to take a 22-21 lead late in the first half.
Freshman ERNIE ARAMBULA led the Monarchs with 13 points, including four three-pointers, two of which came in the second quarter.
Monte Vista Senior JADEN DAWN added 12 points, including six in the second quarter.
The Centurions led just 30-27 at halftime but used an 18-3 run at the end of the third changed the complexion of the game.
Senior DERRICK WILEY added 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Monte Vista.
Senior DEMARCUS MCKAN had eight points and four rebounds for the Monarchs.
Monte Vista’s SIRR YOUNG got hot late, putting up seven points in the fourth quarter. He also had two assists, two steals and two rebounds in the contest.
The Monarchs will face Steele Canyon on Saturday at 1;30 p.m. at Grossmont High.
WESTVIEW 71, STEELE CANYON 51 – The undefeated Wolverines defeated the Cougars at the Grossmont Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Wolverines led 14-9 after one period, then the Cougars’ ANTHONY KORO turned in the team’s highlight with a steal and layup to bring the early lead to within 22-21 with three minutes gone in the second quarter.
The Cougars took a pair of leads after that but trailed, 35-29, at halftime, as the Wolverines scored 10 of the final 13 points of the half.
Senior NATHAN BARNETT had eight points and five rebounds in the first half for SCHS, but Westview led by 10 midway through the third.
The Cougars trailed 59-49 after three periods, but the Wolverines eventually led 69-51 in the final minutes.
