EL CAJON (10-11-15) — The free-falling Grossmont College Griffins can’t seem to find the brake pedal as they succumbed to visiting Mount San Antonio College 45-28 in Saturday’s (Oct. 10) second round of National Division play.
Officially the Mounties are 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the North Central League, while Grossmont is 2-4 overall, 0-2 National Southern League.
Grossmont trailed only 31-28 after MARSHALL FAULK, JR. caught a 2-yard scoring pass from MICHAEL CARRILLO, coupled with an extra point kick from JORDAN REECE left the Griffins 3 points behind with :39 left in the third quarter.
After that the game belonged to the Mounties, who ran away with 2 field goals by Brandon Garcia of 43 and 37 yards, sandwiched by an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jerry McConico to Aaron Vaughns.
Grossmont suffered from more than the triple digit heat.
“That would be easy to use that as an excuse,” said Grossmont sophomore receiver CHRISTIAN BROOKS. “But that shouldn’t have any effect on our performance.” Brooks caught 6 passes for 55 yards and hurled a 30-yard halfback pass to JOVON RICHARDSON for a score.
Richardson also caught a 23-yard pass from Carrillo, and a 4-yarder that set up the scoring strike to Faulk.
“You’ve just gotta want it,” added Brooks.
Playing without hard-nosed running back THOMAS McDONALD certainly did not help the energy-starved Griffin running game, which generated a paltry 23 yards rushing.
Quarterback MICHAEL CARRILLO, who was under siege most of the afternoon, clicked on 18 of 31 passes for 191 yards, including scoring strikes to BRANDON BONHAM of 21 yards, and Faulk for 2 yards.
Grossmont’s defense contributed to the scoring pot with a 33-yard interception return by DAVID LEWIS in the final two minutes of the second quarter. Also picking off interceptions for the Griffins were KALEB HARSTVEDT and ANTHONY DAVIS.
Heading up the Grossmont defense was linebacker NICK GALATIS with 11 tackles, giving him 68 stops for the season. Not to be overlooked was JORDAN ARNOLD who had 6 tackles including 2 for losses.
