MT. SAN ANTONIO 41, SAN DIEGO MESA 35
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO – In a game full of twists and turn, Mt. San Antonio College defeated San Diego Mesa College, 41-35, in four overtimes to take a National Central League game on Saturday night at Douglas Stadium.
The Mounties stopped the Olympians in the fourth extra period after the teams traded touchdowns in two of the first three overtimes.
Then, Mt. SAC’s Rachaad White scored on a 5-yard run to end the lengthy contest.
“Heartbreaker,” Mesa head coach GARY WATKINS said. “My kids played so hard tonight for 60 minutes and then some. I told them I was proud of their effort.”
The Olympians had a chance to win the game in regulation, but the Mounties blocked a 39-yard field goal attempt as time expired. Mesa got great field position following a 20-yard punt, starting at the Mt. SAC 42.
Mesa (4-5, 1-3 NCL) got off to a rip-roaring start with a blocked punt by REGGIE PRINCE and recovery for a touchdown by ANTHONY BARKSDALE, who returned the ball three yards for a 7-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
The Olympians had a strong effort on defense in the first half, but Mt. SAC tied the game late in the second quarter at 7-all on a 26-yard touchdown pass.
Freshman JUSTIN KAPLAN, out of Torrey Pines High, had a pair of field goals in the third quarter, as the score was tied 13-all after three periods.
The Mounties took the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter on a short run.
Mesa College sophomore wide receiver DJ SMITH, from Downey, caught a pass for a 36-yard score from freshman quarterback JAKE DUNNINWAY to tie the game at 20-all with 11:03 left in the game. Smith led all receivers in the contest with 10 receptions and 125 yards.
Mt. SAC (5-4, 1-3) scored first, but sophomore running back TYLER TUTT countered with a 2-yard rush, sending the game to the second OT.
The defenses toughened in the second extra session. The Mesa defense denied the Mounties on a fourth-and-15 pass attempt from the 30.
The Mounties scored on their third drive, then passed for two points for a 35-27 edge.
Former Olympian High player ISAIAH WILLIAMS (four receptions for 57 yards) caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dunninway, then the Olympians converted a two-point conversion pass to keep the game tied, 35-all.
The Mounties, however, made a stop in the fourth overtime, forcing a fourth-and-3 incompletion from the 18, then drove for the game-winning touchdown on the final possession.
Dunninway passed 50 times, completing 26 attempts, for 268 yards.
San Diego Mesa’s DOMINIC MCMANUS, a freshman from Ramona, had six receptions for 59 yards. HUNTER ALLEN had a 52-yard kickoff return for Mesa.
The Olympians also got fumble recoveries from sophomore GABRIEL COLBORN and freshman DEVIN SANDERS. Sanders, from Mira Mesa High, also had eight tackles, including one for loss.
Mesa will meet Palomar at Douglas Stadium in the season finale next week.
“I just talked with them about staying together,” Watkins said. “We have a huge crosstown game and we will be ready to play this upcoming Saturday.
“We’re not really concerned with anything besides being the best team we can be week ten versus Palomar.”
