GOLDEN WEST 24, SOUTHWESTERN 20
EastCountySports.com staff report
CHULA VISTA – Golden West College receiver Jonathan Earl won a wrestling match on a 50-50 fade pass in the right corner of the end zone with 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter to steal a 24-20 National Southern League win from Southwestern College at DeVore Stadium on Saturday night.
Earl’s second touchdown of the night came just nearly a minute-and-a-half after the Jaguars’ DEANDRE DANIELS rushed up the field for a 19-yard touchdown to give Southwestern a three-point lead with just under two minutes to play.
But Southwestern (5-4, 1-3 NSL) threw an interception on the next series, ending any hope of a wild finish to a game that lacked much offense.
Earl’s first touchdown had given Golden West a 17-6 lead with 7:07 to play in the third quarter.
But the Jaguars scored their first touchdown with just under six minutes to play in the game on an 18-yard touchdown pass to PADEN HAZUGA from quarterback MARCUS HERNANDEZ-TORREZ to slice the lead to 17-12.
The Jaguars executed a successful onside kick, recovering the ball at midfield with 5:58 remaining in the game.
Southwestern really took to the air in this one, throwing 52 pass attempts.
Hernandez-Torrez entered the game early in the second quarter and was 21-of-40 for 177 yards.
Southwestern’s DEANGELO HOWARD had 98 yards of total offense, including a team-high six receptions, and a 30-yard rush.
ANDRE RANDOLPH had four receptions for a team-high 52 yards receiving for Southwestern.
The Jaguars’ defense had three interceptions in the contest, as ANGELO TRUJILLO, DEVIN WASHINGTON, and LOGAN DARBY got the picks.
Golden West (4-5, 2-2) broke the ice with 4:03 left in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Beau Kalbacher to Ben Ratzlaff from seven yards out to cap a nine-play, 72-yard drive.
Ironically, Southwestern coach ED CARBERRY previously had his eye on the now-Golden West duo.
“Their quarterback was able to run and pass effectively,” Carberry said. “Ratzlaf (from Westview High) caught a bunch of balls (four). He’s got the back shoulder, jump, turn, keep the defender off, down pretty good.”
With 38 seconds left in the first half JAIME MEDINA, who earlier this week committed to San Diego State University, connected on a 50-yard field goal to bring the Jags to within 7-6.
“We have not been finishing drives having to settle field goals,” Carberry said. “Then we scored twice at the end, so go figure.”
The Rustlers opened the second half with a drive that resulted in a field goal.
Southwestern had four turnovers, including three fumbles.
“Our starting center broke his foot four weeks ago,” Carberry said. “Then the next young guy hurt his knee and had to come out, we were on our second center of the night.
“We made a million mistakes on offense. We had some breakdowns but all we have to do is fall on the ball and we tried to pick it up.”
Southwestern is qualified for a bowl and a sixth win next week against Orange Coast (1-8)would likely guarantee a postseason game.
Southwestern’s football staff entertained families of several prep recruits, including some from East County, who saw an exciting finish.
