RIVERSIDE – Eleventh-ranked Southwestern College held the state co-No. 1 Riverside Tigers off the scoreboard on their first five possessions on Saturday night.

Then the Tigers hit the Jaguars with touchdowns on four straight possessions in the second quarter to take control of a 36-6 National Conference Southern League game at Wheelock Stadium.

The Jaguars’ LOGAN DARBY recovered a fumble on RCC’s second possession of the game, setting up SWC at the Tiger 24. But a completion down to the five resulted in a turnover right back to the hosts.

Still, Riverside (7-1, 3-0 NSL) failed to get more than one first down on its remaining three possessions of the quarter.

The Tigers then dropped a little momentum on the Jags, recording a sack for safety with under two minutes to go in the first quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Stone Smartt threw a pair of touchdown passes, then rushed for a third score as the Tigers all of a sudden had a 23-0 lead with under four minutes to play in the second quarter. RCC added another score before intermission and it was 30-0, as Southwestern had little to show for its outstanding start.

“Defensively, we played really well,” Southwestern coach ED CARBERRY said. “They hit a deep ball for a touchdown, but we had a lot of fourth-and-1, fourth-and-2, fourth-and-3.”

The Tigers could only manage a pair of long field goals in the second half as Southwestern’s defense was able to get back down to business.

The Jaguars finally got on the board in the third when freshman NICHOLAS BAILEY, out of St. George, Utah, caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from sophomore DEMONTE MORRIS with a minute to go in the period.

“We had over 400 yards last game and feeling like everything is right, then one week later it isn’t,” Carberry said.

Southwestern (5-3, 1-2 NSL) finished with five sacks on the night. The Jaguars’ defensive line was making life difficult for Smartt for a majority of the game.

“They really keyed in our run offense,” Smartt said. “We like to start off with a run to open teams up and get our pass going, but they shut down our run really well. They came prepared.”

Freshman linebacker NOAH BERRY, from Gulf Breeze, Fla., led the Jags with 14 tackles, including seven solo stops and a sack.

Former Mount Miguel Matador DURAN MILLER, a sophomore, had 10 stops overall.

“We sacked them a number of times but that doesn’t always convert to points,” Carberry said. “We just had way too many snaps on defense.”

Southwestern running back DEANDRE DANIELS had 79 yards on 16 carries, but the Jaguars had just 77 yards passing.

CAMERON KANE had a team-high four receptions for 44 yards for Southwestern.

“I thought we got handled up front,” Riverside head coach Tom Craft said. “Their two D-tackles did a great job; they dumped our guards and centers into the quarterback’s lap.

The Riverside defense held the Jaguars to just 145 yards on offense. The Tigers had 440 yards on offense.

“There are good teams, there are great teams and there are elite teams, and we faced one of those elite teams today,” Carberry said. “We hung in there for a while; we got a good idea of what it is going to take to win at an elite level.”

The Jaguars will host Golden West next Saturday at 6 at DeVore Stadium.

“They are always well coached,” Carberry said “Their head coach, Nick Mitchell, is super organized on defense and runs a solid offense. His teams don’t make mistakes and that’s hard to do at this level. They just don’t make mistakes very often.”

Southwestern concludes the season at 1-7 Orange Coast.

“We have two very winnable games left and if we win those, it would make us 7-3 and it would be a great finish for our first year in the National Division and we would get a bowl game,” Carberry said. “Those were basically the goals we set out for the beginning of the season.

“We also want to get to win a bowl game at this level and get an idea of where we are at and what we need to do to become one of those elites.”
