LAKESIDE (10-6-2018) – The Steele Canyon Cougars dialed up several long-distance plays that resulted in touchdowns Friday night against the El Capitan Vaqueros.
The Cougars have been known to bounce back from defeat a few times during their long string of success. Their latest rebound came on Friday night in a 55-21 over El Cap.
The visitors struck quickly and often to build a 28-0 first-quarter lead and ended up rushing for six touchdowns as a team.
Senior quarterback NATHAN BARNETT accounted for 257 yards of total offense and three scores. He had rushing touchdowns of 59 and 53 yards.
Sophomore WESLEY NEELY III ran for a pair of touchdowns, including an 80-yard scoring jaunt to finish with 140 yards on the ground on just four carries.
Senior back KENNETH WATSON reached the end zone twice, as well, including a 7-yard run to score on the opening drive of the game.
Barnett connected with senior receiver VALON MARTINEZ on a 54-yard touchdown, while senior CAZZ TRISBY had three receptions.
CHRIS CARTER added a kickoff return for a touchdown for SC.
Steele Canyon got interceptions from juniors ANTOINE WALKER and THOMAS MAX NYUMAH.
The Cougars got sacks from seniors BILLY TELLOUS and SPENCER O’GORMAN.
Junior LUIS ALVARADO led the Steele defense with nine tackles, including four solo.
El Capitan senior wide receiver YAPHET YOKLEY struck for back-to-back scores in the second and third quarter from junior quarterback WICK HAUSER. Yokley finished with eight receptions for 160 yards.
Senior JOHN CASE had three receptions for the Vaqueros, as Hauser passed for 254 yards.
El Capitan senior TAYLOR GRASMICK caught a touchdown passes and had 60 yards of total offense.
The 55 points collected for Steele was the most the Cougars have ever scored against El Capitan. The Cougars’ previous best against El Cap came in a 47-27 decision in 2007.
