SANTA BARBARA (9-22-2018) – The 2018 Grossmont College women’s volleyball team has overcome more adversity with an injury-filled lineup-changing squad and quite a few road games.
One thing the 2018 Griffins do not lack is the drive. These ladies never give up and always give 100 percent.
Sophomore ALEXIS VANLANDINGHAM has been riding the top of the charts in many categories this season, including most recently leading with 0.64 blocks per set.
Vanlandingham, like all of her teammates, remains very humble, and all, about the team effort.
Grossmont took the floor with pride and poise as if they were undefeated, yet humble when spoken to.
The Griffins went right to work, taking the first set 25-15.
Several sophomores mentioned at the beginning of the season that the Vaqueros were high on their radar, as they split their meetings last year.
Although the Griffins came into the contest at 9-2 and Santa Barbara City College 2-5, the two teams have had their share of competitiveness, as the Vaquero squad has a few great athletes, as well.
The Vaqueros’ KENZIE GARRISON led her team with 10 kills and 10 digs to complete her impressive third double-double of the year.
However, the Griffins pounded their way through winning the next two sets, 25-19, and by the skin of their teeth, 27-25, to complete the sweep, 3-0.
Leading the way, freshman SHANEY LIPSCOMB had 13 kills.
“I thought the girls played the best match of the year,” said Grossmont Head Coach Jamie Ivers. “Santa Barbara is a very talented team.
“Our setters did a great job of executing and maintaining composure. We served tough and kept SBCC out of system a majority of the time. Our discipline was key in this with blocking and defense, coupled with pressure in serving. “
Along with the typical fantastic play of Lipscomb and Vanlandingham, setters HALEY MORTON and KYLEE SNYDER played strong, as well.
Snyder had an ace and an amazing 15 assists. Morton had two aces, two kills, and 22 assists.
“This was a fun trip,” said Morton. “We got up to Santa Barbara early enough to hang out at the beach which was super fun. I felt like everything was clicking for our team, our passing and defense was great, which helped us run our middles and fast offense and able to get the win against a competitive team like SBCC.”
Grossmont (10-2) will face Mt. SAC at 1 p.m. on Sunday the 28th, and Rio Hondo at 2:30 p.m. at San Diego Mesa.
Grossmont defeated Mt. SAC, 3-1, on August 29th, the first game of the season.
