Dunninway’s 4 TD passes, Olympians’ picks beat Griffins

2018 COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
SAN DIEGO MESA 40, GROSSMONT 14
EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Mesa College Olympians defeated the Grossmont College Griffins, 40-14, Saturday on Homecoming night.
The Olympians spent the evening intercepting several Grossmont passes, which combined with a four-touchdown passing performance by JAKE DUNNINWAY, was more than enough on this night.
“It’s always nice to get a victory,” Mesa head coach GARY WATKINS said. “It’s nice to correct any mistakes we had after a victory. We talk to them a lot about not compounding mistakes.”
REGINALD PRINCE picked off a pass deep in Grossmont territory and quickly got into the end zone for an 18-yard score and a 13-0 lead. By the end of the night, the Olympians may need another trip to the hardware store for a new steel “Turnover Trashcan.”
“It’s always nice when you get a defensive touchdown,” Watkins said. “It’s so exciting. Our defense is always banging on that trashcan during the game. It’s been a nice little deal for us.
“It’s even better when you get a turnover that leads to an offensive touchdown, too, those are always nice to have.”
Mesa also forced and recovered a fumble.
“We have to win that turnover battle each week,” Watkins said. “We have to take care of the football at all times. The previous two games we had zero turnovers and tonight we had one. Our defense gives us the opportunity to win the turnover battle.”
Mesa College opened the game with a long touchdown pass by Dunninway to DJ SMITH on their first offensive series to take a 7-0 lead.

The Olympians forced a turnover near midfield toward the end of the first quarter and then recovered a Grossmont punt attempt at the Griffins’ 10-yard line.
The short field set up a second connection between Dunninway and Smith and a 21-0 advantage.
Mesa got its third interception in the in the first half when HAVANI MAKIHELE took it down to the Grossmont 33.
“This week our linebackers stepped up,” Watkins said. “Both Havani and Prince were gray shirts last year, so this is just their fourth game. It takes time to get used to playing those big downs, but hopefully, they will continue this progression.
“Up front is where we are seeing the consistency. DEVIN SANDER and ISAIAH STILLS are really coming to play each and every week.
Dunninway later found ISAIAH WILLIAMS for his third TD pass of the first half.
DANIEL WEATHERS added a third interception in the first half with 1:10 left before intermission.
“We did a good job pressuring their O-line,” Watkins said. “We made their O-line have to have to react to different movement.”
Dunninway’s fourth touchdown throw came in the third quarter when he connected with JOSEPH MOREIN for an 87-yard hookup.
“We’ve got confidence in Jake,” Watkins said. “With TREY (COX) not being cleared to participate, Jake is getting more reps and every game his confidence is growing and growing. He is getting more comfortable in what we’re doing.”
JUSTIN KAPLAN closed out Mesa’s scoring-fest with a pair of field goals, from 26 and 40 yards, respectively.
“I wanted to put Kaplan out there for live kicks in a game,” Watkins said. “He’s recovering from an injury, but he’s getting his plant-leg strength back and was impressive in practice this week.
“As he has grown in confidence, I want to give him those opportunities in games. With each kick that goes through, his confidence will continue to grow.”
Grossmont MAZE MASOE had a sack in the first half.
“JARIUS BURNETTE and JAY WILLIAMS both had outstanding games,” Grossmont head coach MIKE JORDAN said.
Victory formation! That’s a final. Mesa 40, Grossmont 14.
