STEELE CANYON 47, BONITA VISTA 7
EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – The Steele Canyon Cougars – and quarterback NATHAN BARNETT – made quick work of the winless Bonita Vista Barons here Friday night.
Cougars junior ANTOINE WALKER had six points before many had reached their seats, as he returned the opening kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown, and Barnett rushed for four scores in the game in a 47-7 win.
“Nathan will improve every day with his great attitude great work ethic,” Steele Canyon head coach SCOTT LONGERBONE said. “It was a great team win. We had our entire backup defense in and they didn’t score.”
Steele running back JUNIOR AKINTUNDE had a rushing touchdown for an early 14-0 edge. Barnett completed a 21-yard pass to get Steele inside the 5 to set up the score.
“Great to see Junior Akintunde come back from injury and get a TD,” Longerbone said.
ERNIE JUAREZ and JOSIAH STEWART combined on a sack in the first quarter.
Akintunde has a 21-yard run in the first quarter, as well.
Barnett had a nine-yard rushing score to make it 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.
ALEXANDER ATHERTON had a great defensive game, according to Longerbone.
Senior VALON MARTINEZ caught a short screen pass that he turned for a gain. After a couple of runs by Barnett, he capped a drive with another seven-yard score.
Cougar senior back KENNETH WATSON had a 43-yard run for the Cougars, then Barnett threw a 19-yard pass to Watson to get Steele inside the 10.
Barnett’s 2-yard keeper was his third-consecutive score of the first half. Steele led 35-7 at halftime.
Junior CHANCE JOHNSON and Walker helped contain Bonita Vista’s passing game.
Senior IAN MILLER added a sack for SC and junior CAMERON EWERT added an interception.
Barnett’s fourth-straight score was a 44-yard quarterback draw.
Senior CAZZ TRISBY added a rushing touchdown for Steele Canyon, which hosts Otay Ranch in a closely-rated game next Friday night.
“When we don’t turn the ball over we can be good,” Longerbone said. “Too many penalties, but we played well. The O-line o line blocked their tails off.”
Paving the way up front were seniors BILLY TELLOUS, SOMMER AUDEH, JOSH CONSTANCIO, ANDREW MORALES and ARAMIS CARSON.
Steele Canyon will get a nice test next Friday when its hosts evenly-matched Otay Ranch.
