GROSSMONT VALLEY LEAGUE
VALHALLA 15, HELIX 14
The Norsemen rally to score all their runs over the middle frame innings and held off the Highlanders to finish undefeated in league play.
Helix came in looking to spoil the Norsemen’s undefeated league season hopes and things looked like it would go their way as they rolled to six runs in the top of the second inning to lead 6-0.
The Norsemen didn’t fret as Victoria Villegas (3-5, 3R, 3 RBI, HR) led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo blast that nailed the scoreboard to make it 6-1.
Valhalla pulled even closer in the bottom of the third when Samantha Green (3-4, 3R, 5 RBI, 3B) lined to right field which scored both Jade Hill and Rachel Shelstrom and advanced Kennedy Labshere to second base, she would advance to third and Green advanced to second, Labshere scored on an error and Villegas lined a single to right which advanced Green to third and Villegas would advance to second on the throw.
Both Green and Villegas came into score on a Delaney Stettler base hit to center which tied the game at 6-6.
Thanks to multiple hits in the top of the fourth the Highlanders pushed across two runs to retake the lead 8-6.
However that lead was short lived as Valhalla stormed back in the bottom of the fourth on a base hit by Green that scored both Rylee McMillan and Shelstrom to tie the game 8-8, Villegas reached on an error that scored Labshere to make it 9-8, a couple batters later Green scored on another Helix error, and finally Villegas came into score which brought the lead to 11-8.
Helix again in the top of the fifth would retake the lead with atwo-runn double to pull within a run and tie it on a Valhalla miscue, a double brought in another run and a sacrifice fly made the score 13-11.
Valhalla again would answer as they scored three runs thanks to a groundout by Labshere that brought in Hill, Green roped a triple which scored Shelstrom to tie the game and Villegas drove in Green to give Valhalla a 14-13 lead.
The Norsemen added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Labshere doubled to bring in Hill to make it 15-13. Helix would score in the top of the seventh which brought the score 15-14. However, that was the closest they would get.
With the win the Norsemen clinch an undefeated Valley League record going 10-0.
EL CAPITAN 12, MONTE VISTA 2
The Vaqueros score nine runs over the first two innings and never look back as they clinch second place in the Valley League and take some momentum into the playoffs.
Monte Vista struck first in the top of the first inning as they pushed across a run to take an early 1-0 lead.
However the lead didn’t last as the Vaqueros in the bottom of the first took advantage of miscues to score two runs courtesy of both Madisyn Wieher (3-3, 2R, RBI, 3B) and Katie Collier (2-4, 2R) scoring on them.
El Capitan added a couple more runs in the top of the first inning on a double by Allyson Von Yokes which scored Bailey Olaveson (1-1, 3R) and also a single by Brooklyn Fukushima (1-1, 2 RBI) that scored Von Yokes to make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the second inning more runs came for the Vaqueros as Collier double to score Wieher who led off with a triple, Hannah Davis singled to bring in Collier, Alexa Williams (1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR) followed with a two run smash over the right field fence to give the Vaqueros a 8-1 lead and finally Olaveson scored on a Fukushima sacrifice fly to round out the scoring 9-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Kim Garcia singled to score Olaveson, Von Yokes advanced to third, Olivia Martinez advanced to second. The next batter Taylor North grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Von Yokes and advanced Martinez to third base and Wieher followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Martinez which made it 12-1.
The Monarchs scored their only other run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a lined single.
For the Vaqueros in the win, Williams got the victory going 3 innings while giving up 1 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. Also pitching in the game for the Vaqueros was Kylie Mead who tossed 2 innings of relief giving up 1 run on 3 hits while walking 0 and striking out 2.
