Former Pack Sandoval sharp as Sabre

FOND du LAC, Wis. (4-24-2018) – Prior to the arrival of Mickey Deutschman as head baseball coach at West Hills High, just a handful of Wolf Pack ballplayers ever received a college scholarship to play at the next level.

Among the first to advance while under “Mickey D’s” tutelage is Zach Sandoval, who went to Marian University of Wisconsin.

On Monday (Apr. 23), Sandoval proved is muster by being named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference pitcher of the week for the period covering April 16-22.

Sandoval (West Hills ’16) provided the Sabres with a pair of complete-game efforts only allowing one earned run over 16.0 innings for a stellar 0.56 earned run average.

The sophomore right-hander had a dominant start against Rockford University where he tossed 9.0 innings only allowing a pair of hits and one unearned run. He closed out the weekend with 14 punch outs for a 7.88 strikeouts per nine innings average.

Update (5-1-2018): Sandoval was again nominated for NACC Pitch of the Week, as Marian’s Sabres (13-19 overall), finishing in a tie for second place with seven victories – Sandoval has more than half of his ballclub’s wins — entering the conference tournament. He was also fourth in the league with a 1.98 earned-run average.

SONOMA (3-28-2018) – Already a standout in the classroom as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team, former Grossmont High ace MICHAEL BYERLINE is now becoming a conference standout pitching for Sonoma State.

Following a slow start to the season, Byerline recorded 19 strikeouts over 16 innings in his last three starts, leading the Seawolves to a drastic rise inf the CCAA standings.

Byerline started with six whiffs against nationally-ranked UC San Diego in a victory. He then nailed seven Cal State-San Marcos batters, then recorded six more in Monday’s (Mar. 26) triumph over CSU Dominguez Hills.

It’s been a significant turnaround for the junior, who posted a 6-1 record with the Barona-San Diego Stars summer collegiate program last summer.

UPDATE: On Friday (Mar. 31), Byerline struck out only one, yet only allowed three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in a win over Cal Poly Pomona, gaining a split of the 4-game series. Byerline leveled his record to 4-4 overall (3-3 CCAA).

Byerline ran his personal winning streak to five straight contests after defeating regional rival and No.13-ranked CSU Monterey Bay. It was also his sixth win in seven decisions, as the Seawolves scored in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie, then outscored the Otters in the 10th, 2-1, for the walk-off victory.

Byerline’s hot streak started with a win over UC San Diego, but then he was narrowly nipped in a homecoming contest of sorts at CSI San Marcos.

From there, he defeated CSU Dominguez Hills, Cal Polly Pomona, CSU San Bernardino and CSU Los Angeles before Sonoma State nipped the Top 25 Otters.

Once the Cal Lutheran University softball team placed West Hills High (’16) alum Kendall Marinesi into the starting line-up, there was no taking her out.

After the freshman sat on the bench for the majority of the 2017 season, the freshman was called upon and delivered with a 5-hit performance against La Verne. Since then, Marinesi’s life with the Regals continues to blossom for the infielder.

A member of Cal Lu’s Scholar Athlete Society, her bat has remained especially hot of late.

The hitting spree started on Mar. 30 with a 3-for-3 outing (with a homer) against Chapman University. Then over the past eight contests, Marinesi is batting at a .533 (16-for-30) clip, including multiple hits in her last five starts (12-for-19, .632).

The Regals finished the regular season with a 17-23 record following Saturday’s (Apr. 28) run-rule triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 9-1 in five innings.
