EL CAJON (03- 06-2018) – After an off-season that needs absolutely no introduction or mention, especially on the baseball diamond, the Granite Hills Eagles trotted out to their prospective positions with a simple mission in mind.
Win the baseball contest. Mission accomplished.
The pitching duel was between Granite’s probable ace, TREVOR HAZELHURST and El Capitan’s go-to, SHANE CUNNINGHAM.
Cunningham struck out four while the Granite one-two punch combo of Hazelhurst and JAKE FENN sat
down six.
The Vaqueros opened up the scoring in the second inning as BLAKE PEYTON picked a RBI double to put El Cap up 1-0.
Granite Hills tied it up at the bottom of the 6th inning, as BRADLEY HARRIS, who was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI on the afternoon, singled on a 1-2 count, scoring a run.
“The pitching matchup today was very competitive,” Harris said. “I had an approach each at-bat and I had opportunity to drive in runs for my team.”
The fireworks began in the bottom of the 8th as Harris came through with a walk-off single on an 0-1 count, scoring the winning run was SHAUN MCGREW for a 2-1 Eagles win.
“It wasn’t what looked good, but it was being able to decipher what kind of pitch he was going to toss and making the quick adjustment,” Harris said.
Hazelhurst went seven innings, but Fenn got the win. Cunningham was the only pitcher used by the Vaqueros.
“Both pitchers did fantastic mixing up their pitches, causing the hitters on both sides to struggle making adjustments,” said Granite Hills head coach JAMES DAVIS.
When questioned about why Hazelhurst was pulled after a phenomenal first outing?
“We just wanted to limit his work for this time of year as his pitch count was at 82,” said Davis.
Davis was true to his word, as Hazelhurst was allowed to finish the seventh on 85 deliveries for the afternoon.
