OTAY RANCH – Otay Ranch defeated the visiting Steele Canyon Cougars, 61-46, in the San Diego CIF Division III girls quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Freshman MAHKAYLAH CLINE gave a good indication of things to come with her 16-point effort, nine of which came in the second half.
Sophomore KHYLAYLA BRANDY added nine points for the Cougars, eight coming in the second half.
“Coming out of halftime they went on a run and we couldn’t keep up,” said the Cougars’ LALA WADLEY. “A few of our guards got into foul trouble and we couldn’t get a rhythm. Tonight’s loss was a tough one, but Otay is a good team and they worked for it.”
Otay Ranch led just 25-23 at halftime but outscored Steele Canyon, 22-14, in the third quarter.
“We couldn’t keep them off the foul line and had to play safe on defense and Otay took advantage of that,” said Steele Canyon coach PETER RUIZ. “At the end of the day, I’m still proud of my squad and the great season we had.
“At the end of the day, I’m still proud of my squad and the great season we had,” Ruiz said. “We’ll head into the offseason and start new with the underclassmen. See if we can come back bigger and stronger.”
The Cougars finished an impressive 16-9 overall.
“We should have come out stronger in the third, but we fell short,” said senior captain ELIZABETH BOTT. “We had a great season. I’m very grateful to have been a part of this team.”
The Cougars won on the road to start the playoffs and were the main challenger for the Grossmont Valley League title.
“This season was an eye-opener for us,” said Wadley, a junior. “We realized we could compete with a lot of teams. It’s a season to be proud of for sure.”
