EL CAJON – The Southwestern Jaguars came in a knocked off the Grossmont Griffins, 69-66, in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference South finale on Friday night, as the teams finished tied for second place.
Grossmont fell behind early 7-0 and 10-2, but rebounded from an eventual 11-point deficit to make it mostly a tight game throughout, but Southwestern made a three-point halftime lead stand.
The Jags led 35-32 at intermission.
Grossmont trailed by nine points with under five minutes to go, then tried to scramble to get back in the game late.
BRYCE PARSONS led Grossmont with 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while teammate JOSH MORAN came off the bench to score 15 points and hand out eight assists.
Grossmont guard OSCAR LIMON added 12 points and fellow guard DAVID WHEELER had 11 points.
Wheeler had a three-pointer with 1:33 left in the game then Parsons knocked down to free throws with :53 left to make it a 66-64 game.
Moran had a layup to make it 68-66 with seven seconds to go.
“We struggled scoring inside and out and gave up too many easy baskets and offensive rebounds,” Grossmont coach DOUG WEBER said. “Southwestern was the aggressor and played better tonight.
Southwestern dominated the boards, outrebounding the Griffins, 53-33.
Grossmont finished 7-3 in the PCAC South along with the Jags and is 18-9 overall heading into the state playoff seeding announcement.
