LAKESIDE – You couldn’t blame the El Capitan Lady Vaqueros for feeling comfortable heading into Friday’s night’s Grossmont Valley League finale against visiting Monte Vista.
The El Capitan team, made of nearly entirely sophomores and freshman, has had a stellar season en route to the league banner.

El Capitan freshman MACKENZIE CURTIS scored 29 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had four steals to lead the Lady Vaqueros, who completed a perfect Grossmont Valley League season with a 59-33 victory.
The Vaqueros finished 8-0 and take a six-game winning streak into the San Diego CIF Division 3 playoffs.
“Mackenzie was on another level tonight,” El Capitan coach DARIN CURTIS said. “Scoring, rebounds and getting the ball to her teammates.”
Curtis scored 11 points in the first quarter and had 21 points at halftime.
Already a great talent in her first season, it stands to reason how refined her skills will be as the years progress.
Sophomore guard JORDAN GRANDY added 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers in the first half, along with three steals and three assists.
“Jordan and I have really been on the same page of late,” Mackenzie Curtis said. “We love playing on this level. We want to carry this energy over to CIF. We are going to ride this train as far as it’s going to take us.
Freshman center SERENE WECKBACK added nine points, three rebounds and three steals for El Capitan.
“We came in a little banged up tonight and had to limit the minutes of some starters,” Darin Curtis said. “Proud of our bench doing their job.”

El Capitan figures to host a home game in the opening round of the San Diego CIF Division 3 playoffs.
“We are definitely feeling good,” Grandy said. “We feel more confident now winning league going into CIF. We are definitely prepared because I can tell you we work extremely hard.”
Monte Vista’s SARA TAHA had a team-hight 13 points, including nine in the second half.
Senior YOLANDA ESCAMILLA came home with eight points, including a pair of first-quarter threes. Junior TORRI HONORE added seven points for Monte Vista.
