SANTEE (2-9-18) – The last time the West Hills Wolf Pack and Grossmont Foothillers met at Grossmont back in mid-January the game was a close one, as well, as the Wolf Pack prevailed 42-39. This time around both teams with playing for league position and also playoff position as each team is looking in for playoffs.
Early on neither team could get a rhythm going as each team couldn’t buy a basket but West Hills was able to get 4 points in the first quarter by Kerrie Daniels as they shutout the Foothillers 6-0.
Grossmont in the second quarter got the offense going as they were able to climb back into the contest as Candace Henderson and Marissa Giles each knocked down multiple three-pointers apiece to lead 12-8.
The Wolf Pack would pull within 11-12 on a three-ball by Caitlyn Stayner. However, Grossmont would extend their lead with another three-ball with a couple minutes left in the half to lead 15-11 which would be the score at the intermission.
Both teams came out of the intermission ready to roll in the third quarter.
However, both teams couldn’t take advantage much of their opportunities.
Grossmont in the third quarter finally took the lead despite being outscored 7-6 in the quarter by the Wolf Pack. After three quarters of play, the Foothillers led 21-18 heading into the final period.
Back and forth both squads went and with 4:35 left in the game the Hillers led 27-25 after a basket. Grossmont would actually lead until almost 2 minutes remaining when West Hills tied the game up on a layup at 30-30.
With only a minute remaining in the contest the Wolf Pack on a 17-foot jumper would regain the lead 32-30. Grossmont would have another shot to either tie or retake the lead and with just over thirty seconds left the Foothillers missed a shot and the ball was rebounded by West Hills to seal the victory.
On the night for the Hillers, Henderson scored 12 points on the night while Giles had 6 points. For the Wolf Pack, it was Nolie Wiley who scored 6 of her 10 points in the fourth quarter and Daniels who scored 8 points.
“Having key players miss practice Monday and Wednesday didn’t help,” Grossmont coach Grace Campbell said. “Consistency has been an issue. We were extremely rusty.”
With the loss, the Foothillers drop to 10-13 (3-5) while the Wolf Pack move to 11-12 (6-2) with the win.
Next up on the schedule for the Foothillers is a contest on Tuesday, February 13th against Santana at home at 6 pm while the Wolf Pack are on the road against the top team Mount Miguel also slated for a 6 pm start.
