Hillers beat Scotties for third-straight

LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers turned away a second-half rally by Helix and upset the Highlanders, 55-51, in a Grossmont Hills League game at the Hillers’ gym Friday evening.
Grossmont’s CANDACE HENDERSON had 15 points, including a key field goal in the fourth quarter with under two minutes remaining as part of her 10 points in the second half.
“Together and toughness was our pregame talk and they did exactly that,” said coach GRACE CAMPBELL of her Foothillers. “Everyone stepped up tonight. We brought the intensity and the toughness.”
After starting the league season 0-3, Grossmont has evened its league mark.
“This is a great win for the program and shows that we are improving and that together anything is possible,” Campbell added.
Helix’s MARINA SMITH had a three-pointer in the second quarter for Helix.
Grossmont’s JAZMINE LEE scored all ten of her points in the first half as the Hillers led 29-20 at intermission.
The Hillers’ EMILY BARNES scored in the third quarter as Grossmont maintained the lead.
Grossmont’s MARISSA GILES hit a short jumper in the lane for a 37-30 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Later, another field goal by Giles seemingly had the Hillers in control at 43-34.
The Highlanders would mount a run, however.
Helix senior KALIAH KING scored to close the lead to 44-43 with just over five minutes left in the game.

Helix’s aggressiveness on the offensive boards provided several extra chances.
Giles drove the lane for a 48-46 lead. She had eight points int he fourth quarter.
“Marissa hit some clutch shots in the fourth,” Campbell said.
Grossmont made several free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Foothillers only missed two free throws for the contest.
“We knew going into the game we had to make our free throws,” Campbell said. “Helix is an aggressive team and we knew that we would be on the line a lot tonight.”
The Foothillers (10-11) improved to 3-3 in the Hills League.
