EL CAJON (9-26-15) — Christian High’s BENJAMIN (THEO) GOODWIN and MICHAEL TOBIASON found themselves in the Patriots’ offensive spotlight Friday night (Sept. 25) against visiting Imperial High.
Tobiason scored a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter to extend Christian’s lead to 24-0 and the Patriots won in style, utilizing all of its talent in a 52-24 win. Tobiason bounced outside on a draw, following the lead blocks of senior NATE CAZARES and junior JONATHAN STINE.
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Tobiason got the lion’s share of the carries against the winless Tigers after the Patriots put a big handicap on their foes early. Tobiason scored on a 20-yard run in the third quarter that gave Christian a 31-0 advantage. He finished with 139 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 rushes. He was a sparkplug in a Christian offense that produced 518 yards on 65 carries.
“We used a lot of players and had some outstanding efforts from players such as Tobiason and Goodwin,” noted Patriots offensive coordinator DAVID BEEZER.
Quarterback DAVID JEREMIAH hit NICK SEXTON with a 41-yard touchdown pass, as Jeremiah made a great pass under heavy pressure from the Tigers’ rush, then hit Sexton splitting down the middle seam, where he laid it right in where there were no defenders, to extend an early Patriots lead to 17-0
Jeremiah finished with 20 completions for 251 yards and a pair of TDs.
“We came off a tough game, so we had two weeks to prepare,” Jeremiah said. “We got after it tonight – just went out and had a lot of fun.”
ADRIAN PETTY, who is nursing a slight hamstring pull, made his presence felt early with a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead with 8:36 left in the first quarter, as he busted in from 3 yards out behind the menacing push block of senior COLE LEHTO.
Christian junior Goodwin scored on a 26-yard end-around carry to the left side to make it 45-14 with 7:42 left in the game. Goodwin also was on the connection of a 50-yard pass from Jeremiah that increased the Pats’ lead to 38-0.
Goodwin totaled 120 yards on 9 receptions. He also had 2 carries for 26 yards and a score.
Imperial added a touchdown with 3:34 left, but the Patriots quickly countered.
Sexton added a touchdown, as he turned in a 49-yard run with 3:22 remaining.
Senior TY NICHOLS also led the way on the offensive front for Christian (3-1), while junior defensive end ZACH HOGUEISSON disrupted a would-be screen pass by recording an interception, all while a blocker was engaging the Patriots’ defender late in the first half.
Christian senior safety JACOB SANDUSKY recovered a fumble at the Imperial 32 with 2:15 left in the first half. JOHN GERSHOW also had an interception for the Pats, while BRANDON HESTER produced 59 yards in five plays. Not to be overlooked was GARRET NEILSEN who caught 5 passes for 18 yards.
Brandon Hueso had three rushing touchdowns for the Tigers.
Christian High senior JASON LYON attended the game and received a standing ovation from his Christian High family. Lyon was the Patriots No. 88 wide receiver until it was discovered he had a brain tumor during the summer.
