Cam, Pack cash in on win over El Capitan

SANTEE – Early on both squads went back and forth but the West Hills Wolf Pack would find themselves a cushion as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead but El Capitan’s Jacob Pfitzner would nail a three-pointer to cut the lead to 11-6 which would be the last basket of the first quarter.

However, the small lead would expand for West Hills to start the second quarter as Freshman Cash Creighton would nail back-to-back three-pointers much to the delight to the West Hills student section and would give West Hills a 17-6 lead early on.

The Vaqueros couldn’t stop the bleeding as they couldn’t buy a basket and the Wolf Pack would eventually find themselves leading 22-6 as they extended the lead via an 11-0 run.

The run would eventually be stopped with about 5:20 left in the quarter when El Capitan made their first basket to make it 22-8.

The Vaqueros would finally put a small dent in the lead as they were able to outscore the Wolf Pack in the final couple of minutes of the half 8-4 to trail 26-16 at the break.

Both teams came out of the intermission ready to play but the Vaqueros would start off with the hot hand as they were able to cut more into the West Hills lead and pull within 28-21.

Unfortunately, the bright spot by the Vaqueros didn’t last as West Hills made some adjustments and zipped right back to a double-digit lead 34-21 thanks to a 6-0 run with about 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Leading the way for the Pack in the quarter were Cam Barry and Adam Dillon who each had 6 points which led to a 42-28 lead at the end of the third quarter.

For the Vaqueros in the third quarter, Pfitzner nailed a couple of three-pointers while Jacob Lopez scored 3 points but it wasn’t enough as they were outscored 16-12.

Unfortunately for the Vaqueros, the real damage was done in the fourth quarter by the Pack as Barry was able to score 12 of his 34 points on the night.

Also on the defensive end for the Pack, it was their ability to keep Pfitzner scoreless in the fourth quarter which really didn’t help the Vaqueros even though Lopez and Dre Raymond each had 5 points apiece.

The Wolf Pack would eventually increase their lead and pull away late with 2:17 as they led 56-35.

Leading the scoring for the Vaqueros was Lopez who scored 12 points.Pfitzner scored 10 while draining 3 3-pointers and Chase Lovato scored 9 points which included a couple 3-pointers.

For West Hills besides Barry, both Dillon and Cade Raley each scored 8 points and Creighton with his 2 3-pointers scored 6 points.

Next up for the Vaqueros is their Grossmont Valley League opener at home against one of the favorites to win league in Mount Miguel on Friday night January 12th at 7 pm.

West Hills will next play Wednesday in one last non-league tune-up at home against Escondido at 7 pm and then open up Grossmont Hills League play Friday night January 12th at home against Steele Canyon at 7 pm.
