EL CAJON – The Helix Highlanders beat Westview, 65-46, in the Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops tournament on Thursday.
Helix’s defense starting strong, holding the Wolverines to just two first-quarter field goals.
Helix led 23-17 at halftime.
Senior BRADLEY DUNN stepped up and had a big fourth quarter for the Highlanders, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the contest.
Dunn hit four field goals in the fourth.
JAYLEN HINSON scored a team-high 16 points for Helix, including 10 in the second half.
MAURICE HOLMES got the Scotties off to a strong start with 10 first-half points including a pair of threes.
“We did a good job defending the three and had more patience on offense,” Helix coach BRENNAN CASSADY said.
Helix (8-4), which snapped a two-game losing streak, next faces San Ysidro at home on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in a non-league contest.
MONTE VISTA 64, VINCENT MEMORIAL 29 – The Monarchs clamped down on Vincent Memorial at home in a tournament tilt at the 35th annual Aztec Holiday Classic.
“It was nice to get everyone some quality minutes,” said Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY. “All but a couple of our guys got into the scoring column.”
The Monarchs improved to 11-3 overall and will face Hilltop in the Aztec Classic on Friday at 6 p.m.
EL CAJON VALLEY 57, CLAIREMONT 43 – The Braves earned a decisive win over the Chieftains in a Braves Winter Tournament contest for their fifth-straight victory.
El Cajon Valley (9-4) meets Holtville on Friday at 6:30 in another Braves Winter Tournament game.
GROSSMONT 63, LINCOLN 58 – The Foothillers held second-half leads of 45-38 and 51-47 to take the win over the Hornets Friday afternoon at Grossmont High.
The Foothillers improved to 5-7 overall as they prepare to face Chula Vista on Friday in a tournament contest on the road.
OLYMPIAN 77, STEELE CANYON 72 – The Cougars were dealt their first loss of the season by coach MARTY ELLIS’ Olympian team at the Spartan Classic.
Steele Canyon (6-1) will face Bonita Vista in a Spartan Classic matchup on Friday at 4 p.m.
DE LA SALLE 60, CHRISTIAN 52 – The Patriots faced De La Salle at the Max Preps Holiday Classic.
Christian fell to 5-5 overall.
The Patriots next face Serra (8-3), of Gardena, on Friday at 4:30 in a Max Preps Holiday Classic tile.
HIGH TECH CHULA VISTA 41, LIBERTY CHARTER 40 – The Lions lost a close one, but Liberty Charter is now 2-4 overall.
Liberty faces Mountain Empire on Friday in a Braves Winter Tournament game.
