SANTEE – Steele Canyon improved to 4-0 and Foothills Christian defeated Grossmont once again in the Hillers’ gym, while Helix lost to Boogie Ellis and the fourth-ranked Mission Bay Bucs in the finals of the Sweetwater tournament…
STEELE CANYON 82, RANCHO BERNARDO 78 – Steele Canyon senior GAGE SANDERS scored 26 points and the Cougars won again, this time in overtime, at the Grossmont Winter Classic.
The Cougars led 27-25 at halftime, but the Broncos surged to the lead after three with a 30-point quarter.
Steele Canyon rallied for force the OT. The win was their fourth-straight to open the season.
Senior THOMAS FISHBURNE had 16 points, six assists and five steals for Steele Canyon.
KOBE SANDERS had 15 points, including four three-pointers, and eight rebounds.
Junior GRANT CHILDS added 14 points, including a 9-for-10 performance from the charity stripe.
The Cougars were 15-of-17 from the line overall.
Steele Canyon faces Hilltop (0-7) on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Grossmont Winter Classic.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 62, GROSSMONT 47 – The Knights’; DERRICK CARTER HOLLINGER scored 22 points, while teammate TAESHON CHERRY added 15 as Foothills Christian cruised over the host Foothillers at the Grossmont Winter Classic.
The Foothillers’ AUSTIN ODOM had 16 points, including three three-pointers.
Grossmont’s MYKI MORELAND scored seven points.
Second-ranked FCHS won their six-straight and play Westview on Saturday at the Grossmont Winter Classic. The game is at 6 p.m. at Grossmont High.
Meanwhile, the Foothillers (3-7) were scheduled to play Ramona (6-5) on Saturday night at 7:30 at home in the Grossmont Winter Classic.
MISSION BAY 66, HELIX 52 – The Highlanders’ JAYLEN HINSON made the All-Tournament team at the Sweetwater Lions Club Classic, but the Bucs won the championship final behind section star Boogie Ellis, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Hinson had a steal and a breakaway jam en route to 19 points. Hinson added five rebounds and four assists.
“They are a good team,” Helix coach BRENNAN CASSADY said. “It’s a good barometer of where we are at and where we need to be.
AMARI GREEN added 13 points for Helix, 11 of them coming in the second half. He also had five rebounds and three assists.
MAURICE HOLMES added nine points for Helix before fouling out. He added five rebounds.
Helix (7-3) will play La Salle (8-3), of Pasadena, on Wed., Dec. 27 in the Mt. Carmel Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
MONTE VISTA 89, O’FARRELL CHARTER 47 – The Monarchs were off to a red-hot start and got 20 points from DEONDRE MCHAYLE and 13 from JORDAN BREWER in the win.
Senior AMIR CONLEY added 11 points, while JAIDEN DAWN contributed eight points.
The Monarchs face Del Norte in a Grossmont Winter Classic tournament game on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Grossmont High School.
MOUNT MIGUEL 59, SAN DIEGO 51 – The impressive Matadors pushed their record to 9-1.
The Matadors are right back in action looking for win No. 10 on Saturday in the Grossmont Winter Classic at La Jolla High when they take on University City (3-6) at 4:30 p.m.
EL CAJON VALLEY 77, PREUSS UCSD 66 – The Braves had a nice shooting touch from the outside in the upset the Tritons.
El Cajon Valley improved to 6-4 and are back in action on Saturday against Southwest High in a game scheduled for Santana High at 4:30.
SCRIPPS RANCH 56, VALHALLA 46 – Valhalla jumped out to an 11-7 first-quarter lead, but the Falcons scored 32 points in the second quarter to lead by 17 at halftime.
TY SCHIMKE led Valhalla with 24 points, while RAMZI SULTAN added six points.
TREVONE WIMS had 10 points for Valhalla, and VENCIL YOUSIF and AUSTIN POLA added three points apiece.
Valhalla (2-8) faces a strong Bonita Vista (7-3) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
MARANATHA CHRISTIAN 68, SANTANA 54 – The Eagles knocked off the Sultans thanks in part to an 18-9 first-quarter edge.
The game was part of the Grossmont Winter Classic.
The Sultans trailed by just five at halftime.
Santana fell to 7-4 and faces High Tech San Diego on Saturday at 7:30 in the Grossmont Winter Classic.
