EL CAJON – East teams nearly completed a county-wide sweep in tournament and non-league affairs Thursday night…

HELIX 71, SWEETWATER 69 – Helix edged Sweetwater at the Red Devils’ gym to gain a berth in tonight’s Sweetwater Lions Club Classic opposite county fourth-ranked Mission Bay.

The game was tied at 31-all, but AMARI GREEN’s outlet pass to JAYLEN HINSON, who went in for a slam, soon gave Helix the lead.

Later, Green passed to MAURICE HOLMES for a corner three, as the Highlanders held off the hosts.

Holmes had 15 points, while CARSON BAKER added 11 points, eight assists and nine rebounds.

Hinson finished with 17 points and five assists.

AMARI GREEN had four steals.

“Sweetwater did a great job speeding up the pace of the game and we struggle with it,” said Helix coach BRENNAN CASSADY.

The tournament final game will be held on Friday night at 8 p.m. at Sweetwater High.

Helix (7-2) comes in with a five-game winning streak. The Bucs are 8-1 and have won four straight.

The Highlanders are more lightly regarded this season after losing their top player from last season to a prep school.

However, Helix still boasts a formidable lineup that is quite likely being overlooked currently by local experts.

The Computers haven’t necessarily been impressed either with the Highlanders’ decent start, as they sit at 7-2 overall.

Helix head coach JOHN SINGER hasn’t served on the bench this season.

Cassady has served as the team’s interim coach in Singer’s absence.

Mission Bay won on Thursday night, 72-50, behind junior all-section point guard Boogie Ellis’ 28 points.

The Bucs also feature junior Ronnie Latting and shooter Jay Norton.

Monte Vista hit a three-pointer to go ahead 42-36, then moments later, canned another three for a 47-40 advantage.

The Matadors are now 8-1 overall but not yet getting a sniff from pollsters.

Mount Miguel figures to be inside the county’s top 25 at this point even with this white-hot start.
