EastCountySports.com staff report
SPRING VALLEY – The Monarchs of Monte Vista improved their unbeaten string to five games and improved to 6-1-3 overall with a 2-1 victory over Mater Dei Catholic.
Junior DAMIAN DE LA CRUZ and sophomore GIOVANNI VELAZQUEZ scored for the Monarchs on assists from juniors FRANCISCO DURAN and CARLOS MERCARDO HERNANDEZ.
De La Cruz and Velazquez each have three goals this season.
Sophomore JUAN MUNOZ provided tremendous support for the Monarchs in the win, earning the team’s Man of the Match honor.
Sophomore BRYCE KEMPTON got the win with four saves in goal.
Monte Vista didn’t get a lot of preseason media attention, but their upcoming power rating will surely place them near the county’s top ten.
Monte Vista will be a serious contender in the section’s Division 4 championship playoffs, but first will be a tough Grossmont Valley League season with Valhalla and Santana.
The Monarchs wrapped up play in 2017 and are next back on the pitch on Monday, Jan. 8 at 6 at home against Olympian.
