EL CAJON – (12-1-17) – Last time out, the Grossmont College Griffins defeated the Compton Tartars on Wednesday in preparation for their annual Grossmont Invitational Tournament this weekend at the Griffins’ gym.
Grossmont forward RONALD BLAIN said that the whole tournament was chalk full of talented, competitive teams, in particular, the defending state champion, San Diego City College with an 11-2 record after defeating Desert, 99-72, at the Grossmont Invitational.
The Knights, indeed a marquee attraction at the tourney, will face L.A. Southwest at 6 p.m. tonight.
The Griffins, while spending so much time on the road, have won their last two at home.
Coming off defeating Compton, 81-75, last Wednesday, and Friday evening defeating the long distance Victory Valley Rams, 70-63, leaving their overall record at 7-2, losing only to COD in overtime, 84-78, and to San Bernardino Valley, 77-44, which was the only lopsided loss on the young season.
The Griffins will host the Palomar Comets on Saturday night.
Per coach DOUG WEBER, the Griffins players were asked to stay and observe both Santa Monica and Palomar face each other to look for tendencies and how to match up, score, and defend against each other.
Palomar defeated Santa Monica 70-66, as the Griffins looked on and will now prepare in a short period to prepare for play against the Comets.
Palomar is 5-3 on the season, and it should be a very competitive game.
For the second home game of the season, BRYCE PARSONS and RONALD BLAIN were the keys to Grossmont’s Victory.
Former West Hills High alum Parson had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for 23 total points.
Blain had four three-pointers, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 21 points, and barely missed on a beautiful slam dunk attempt.
Another fact that coach Weber was very proud of off the bench was freshman KADE KYGAR, who grabbed two rebounds and had 3 points.
The Griffins dominated the first half and led 34-25 at intermission.
The Rams came back the second half to make a statement.
At one point the Rams were within 3 towards the end of the contest.
However with Parsons’ great rebounding and added free throws made, Grossmont prevailed 70-63 and will face Palomar (5-3) at 6 p.m. at Grossmont.
