HELIX 43, EASTLAKE 40 – The Titans led by two at halftime, but Highlanders senior guard AMARI GREEN scored 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second half as Helix won its season-opener in their annual appearance at the Hilltop Tournament.
Green went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.
Helix senior JAYLEN HINSON had a pair of three-pointers in the second half, and five points in the fourth quarter.
In the second half, Green and sophomore SAMMY STEWART combined on a perfectly run two-on-one fast break. Helix outscored the Titans 25-20 after intermission, including 15-14 in the fourth quarter.
The Highlanders’ defense already seemed to be in mid-season form, as no Eastlake player scored in double digits. And that is still without a few key players, including starters, that are still with the CIF championship-bound Scotties’ football team.
Helix is currently being guided by interim coach BRENNAN CASSADY.
The Scots will face Otay Ranch on Friday at the Hilltop Tournament. Otay already has an upset on its resume after defeating a tough Helix foe from last season in Canyon Crest Academy by 14 points on Wednesday night.

MOUNT MIGUEL 67, MADISON 54 – The Matadors, considered a county dark horse despite coming off an impressive 2016-17 season, improved to 2-0 with a home win at the Baron-Matador Classic.
MARQUISE EDWARDS led the Matadors with 27 points.
Mount Miguel will host Morse at the Baron-Matador Classic on Friday at 6 p.m.
CHRISTIAN 66, MT. CARMEL 46 – The Patriots won their season opener in a game played at the Horsman Automotive Tournament.
JACKSON LARSON led Christian with 16 points, while teammate NASHOM CARTER added 15.
DANIEL WELCH added 12 points for the Pats.
VISTA 95, WEST HILLS 66 – At the Horsman Automotive Tournament, West Hills senior CAM BARRY nearly stole the show if not for the lopsided final, pouring in 39 points, including 21 in the second half.
However, the host Wolf Pack fell to star Taurus Samuels and the third-ranked Vista Panthers.
Vista led 54-31 at halftime.
Barry made 5 three-pointers and went 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.
MICHAEL TOTAH and ADAM DILLON both added seven points for West Hills (0-1).
The Wolf Pack face Mater Dei Catholic on Friday at 6 p.m. in their next Horsman Tournament contest at West Hills.
RANCHO CHRISTIAN 87, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 71 – The Eagles and highly-touted brothers Isaiah and Evan Mobley, son of Helix great and former Portland University star ERIC MOBLEY, handed the county top-ranked Knights their second consecutive loss to open the season at the BattleZone in Corona.

DERRICK CARTER-HOLLINGER scored 26 points to lead FCHS, but Knights senior TAESHON CHERRY rolled his ankle in the first quarter.
Cherry returned to the contest, but left the game midway through the second quarter and did not return.
USC head coach ANDY ENFIELD was on hand to see his prized recruit.
Foothills Christian will play Chino Hills on Thursday night at 5.

RAMONA 65, EL CAPITAN 53 – The Vaqueros’ JASON PFITZNER scored 23 points, but the Bulldogs blazed out of the gate to a 12-point first quarter lead, then outscored the Vaqueros 14-2 in the third quarter in a Santana Shootout tournament contest.
El Capitan (0-1) will travel to Hoover on Friday for a matchup in the Game On Challenge at 7 p.m.
OCEANSIDE 71, GROSSMONT 64 – The Foothillers lost their season opener at home in the Game On Challenge despite a combined 34 points from AUSTIN (22 points) and JAMIE ODOM for Grossmont.
Grossmont will host San Marcos in the tournament on Friday at 7 p.m.
